Don't think I've seen it mentioned here, but it's not that hard to get a Star Trek: Online beta key at the moment. A few hoops to jump through, but they are giving out keys left and right like they were candy. Get them while they last.

Do I have a link? No. But you guys are Google savvy.

I have friends here at work that are in it now. I think I'll wait. But I hear the ship to ship combat is quite fun.

I watched my roommate play a bit, both on ground and in space, and I thought it couldn't look more like a snooze-fest.

.. and I love me some Star Trek.

I'm in. It's fun. It combines about 2/3s of the best features of Pirates of the Burning Sea (which had amazing ship combat) with a more tolerable ground game and good use of the license.

The ship combat is faster pace than PotBS, which I'm neutral on because I didn't mind the pace of Pirates since it offered the time to really think, plan, and strategize in a wind-sailing navigation environment.

Finally got in. I'm on the fence on this.

Pros - Starship combat is fun. Feels more tactical than any MMO I've played. Having shield facing, turn rates and firing arcs matter is a huge win. I am very pleased with the automatic grouping when you enter a combat instance. Bringing NPCs with you on ground missions is cool.

Cons - Rest of game is mediocre--feels like any other MMO with a thin sci-fi veneer. And I swear in the future, everything is designed an built by giants...even the corridors of tramp steamers (why can an ancient game like EQ have narrow, clausterphobic layouts while this eludes all the newer games I've played?) Ground mission animation needs work...seems more like late alpha/early beta quality to me.

Not sure if it's worth paying money down plus monthly fee for the space combat alone. Hence, I'm on the fence.

The more references I hear about this game being similar to Pirates of the Burning Sea, the more my interest raises from 0.01% in increments of 10. So far I think it's around 40.01%. I may have to check this out.

Part of me wants to be playing, but I really can't justify playing 2 MMOs at once, I get too much enjoyment out of WoW atm, and I don't want to pay for it if I'm not going to use it...

Specs? It's actually not all that GPU heavy, so it's frequently surprisingly laptop friendly, for instance.

It's about 4 years old now I think. I don't recall the CPU specs but I checked the requirements for ST:O and think my video card is not there. I was planning to upgrade, but want to be in top notch place for SW:TOR and buying now might be jumping the gun.

I will let you guys break it in, let me know what you think after that first big patch. I should have my new system by then.

I'ma gonna give er a go for a month, then I'll decide if its worth the monthly fee. May be the first MMO where I am actually looking forward to the PvP.

(yes, I know it)

Not sure how a "tank" works into the lore of Star Trek. The only way I can think of is this:

Klingon officer: "That small ship in the back is repairing all the damage we keep inflicting! We must destroy it!"
Klingon commander: "En cha! Make it so!"
Klingon comm officer: "Commander, we just received another hail from that larger ship in the front. They say we are all "cowardly romulans who have no honor."
Klingon commander: "Those pa'toks! How dare they keep insulting our honor! Keep focus firing on the large ship!"

Seem kinda cheesy. But I'll still give the game a shot at some point.

There's actually no taunting in the game right now. That may change at some point in the future, but I find it more likely (or perhaps I'm simply being overly optimistic) that we'll see bridge crew skills that allow you to create a damage diverting bubble effect or something similar as an abstract for the classic "plot a course in front of the torpedo" save.

In the interim, cruisers don't really tank, per se, in PvP (you can do some "tanking" in PvE stuff to a degree by pissing everything off with torpedo spreads or beam fire at will commands and then letting your group focus fire while the rest of it beats on you) cruisers tend to output steady beam damage whilst throwing crew-based buffs and heals around.

I hope there is no "taunting" involved. Ever. It is a slightly more believable in a game like WoW or EQ because you are fighting things face to face and those games rely heavily on "magic." Star Trek? Not so much. No magic. No face to face contact (for the most part).

Although, if they called it "sent out an inverted tachyon pulse causing their targeting systems to forcibly lock onto us" instead of "taunt" I guess I would not complain. EXACT same thing mechanically, but it's at least trek jargon pulled out of someone's butt (like most trek jargon).

My Engineer and I are enjoying this so far. Ethos is a Lt.4 at this point, and is a starship beast.

Do groups of people (players) operate a vessel in this game, each at their seperate posts?

You control a "captain" of a ship. You move up in rank from Ensign to Admiral.

You have NPC "bridge officers" and acquire more throughout your career.

Groups of PCs, then, can either form fleets or landing parties; depending upon the mission.

As an FYI, from a non-dedicated MMO player. A "casual" gamer, if you will: this game is tons of fun.

It's a bit laggy, but I understand that they're working on that.

I hope more of you guys join.

We could all create a FLEET!
