So I just got a PS3 and I am curious... GoW has been fun so far, but what makes it so great?

Boobs, sex mini-games, and over the top violence! Oo-rah!

But seriously -- I'd say the over-the-topness, larger-than-lifeness of Kratos and the fact that it had such satisfying action and puzzle-solving is what really made it great.

Also, there really wasn't anything like it when it first came out, and that kind of endeared it to its now fanbase. So, much of its success has to do with a release timing perspective.

This is really the main reason. Sure, there are quite a few games out there like it now...but back when it was first released, it was fairly unique. Plus, Kratos is a bad ***.

You hate bayonetta, AND God of War? I'm pretty sure you just don't like action games. :)

You had to play it in its own time. When it first came out I called my girlfriend and explained to her that it was the most bloody, awesome game ever - plus it had tits! So much epic was hardly contained in a DVD.

Now it's common.

I am really enjoying God of War. I was just wondering why it was so popular.

I really think this game is badass. It was the first game in my hand when I bought my PS3.

Ah, sweet. As so many others have said, I think it was the timing. When it came out, it blew everything else out of the water. It helps that they both hold up as great games though.

God of War is great because the fighting mechanic just feels "right." His chain blades are just a pleasure to use, much like swinging around Manhattan in Spider-Man 2 (the game) was just a pure pleasure to do. It's a fun stylized version of Greek mythology that is also nice.

If you play the games expecting to experience the greatest game in the history of the universe, you are of course going to be disappointed. But on the game's own merit it is quite good.

Besides, what other game lets you fight Perseus..... voiced by Harry Hamlin himself?

If I have not played GoW 1 or 2, do you think it'd be ok story-wise to jump straight to GoW 3?

Unless they include a "last time in god of war" catch up story, not really. There's a lot of things that have gotten Kratos to where he is now.

Well, aside from intricacies, GoW 1/2 can be summed up in a few sentences.

A lot of it is just the ineffable "something" factor that makes you think, "Now this is how an action game should feel to play."

While as Lenas says, the macro story can be summed up rather easily, you miss too many little nuances and cool moments if you skip the first two. For anyone considering picking up GoW3, I would say playing through GoW1/2 is just about a must. Besides, with the PS3 Collection edition, you get both games, plus all of the extra, plus polished, upscaled graphics for just about the same price you'd pay for them individually.

What great games!

The set pieces were massive, the puzzles took some interesting twists on the standard action hack and slash, the moves were satisfying, and the main character is the most heartless ******* I'd ever seen.

Each game is a compelling experience that is largely unmatched and heartily emulated.

Oh, I didn't know there was a God of War CE for the PS3. I may pick that up this weekend.

It does have a pretty unique story, and it is one best experienced than read about. If you are thinking of playing the games, I'd recommend it rather than looking for spoilers.

Best Buy Link to the Collection. It is not a CE, just a double disk thing. They have both games on one disk.

WTF?!? Why all of these gorram balancing bullshit things, this has gone from awesome fun to F-You game in one afternoon

Based on that description, I'd say you are at either:

A) That one part on the temple ceiling where you have to jump over the spinning blade arms.

B) In Hades where you have to navigate the fleshy spiked spinning rods

or possibly

C) In Hades having to climb the pillars going up the spin with blades attached to them.

Either way, I understand your frustration (the GoW games are full of those moments). I find it best when I got that way to stop playing, take a break for a while then come back to it. Once you get past them, cooler parts of the game open up.

I have disliked the balance crap in general. I almost threw my controller at the TV with the spinning blade arms. I am now at the save spot right after you finish collecting the two necklaces and cross the swinging ropes

Yeah, that spinning pillar you have to climb with the spikes...... I can't remember any game that pissed me off more than that. However, the awesomeness of GoW games far outweigh those frustrations (in my opinion).

Hehe, even the director of GoW came out later and said they should've balanced that level better. Stick through it, it gets awesome again. :)

The most frustrating part for me was:

Spoiler:
During Phase 2 and 3 of the Aries battle. The Protect the Family was insane magic/rage meter management, and the final Aries form on higher difficulty literally caused me to stop playing and move on to GoW2 (but I didn't feel bad doing this, as I have already played through both games several times previous)
