Beta is LIVE (if you own ODST or managed to snag yourself a code)

Here's Aisha Tyler proving how awesome she is (currently playing the super hot spy on Archer)

And here's a Johnny Cash comp someone made of the early Beta this weekend:

Brother has ODST, so I got to play the beta. While it doesn't differ from Halo 3 greatly, they added in 4 classes that have unique abilities(One has jetpack, one has a shield that can explode killing everything if you charge it long enough, one has a super sprint and the last has a perma cloak that **** up your radar). Weapons are fairly familiar, they brought back the uber pistol of the original Halo. No carbine(which became one of my favorite weapons) but instead has a needler rifle that basicaly fills the same niche. Battle rifle is a one shot now instead of the three round burst. And they nerfed the **** out of the needler. Very disappointed in that.

Biggest disappointment, though? Health packs. Shields regenerate, but you have health bars that don't unless you pick up health kits. I realize that chronologically this makes sense. But it is a huge step back in the evolution of First Person Shooters.

Honestly, I kind of liked that they brought them back. It really seems to add an extra level of strategy to the maps. As well, the fact that you actually have to hit a button to pick one up (instead of just running by) makes them more of a gameplay object.

So far, I've been really enjoying the multiple classes. The guard has been very difficult to get used to, but the other 3 classes are fun and easy to get used to.

I always liked the health pack mechanic. Again, I find myself in the minority.

So far, the worst part of the beta has been watching my moronic team run away from the flags we're supposed to be capturing to shoot people. CAPTURE THE FLAGS, IDIOTS! :)

Guard is great for flag carrying. Drop the flag to do the super shield explody thing to kill everyone(or to keep yourself alive until backup shows up) and then pick the flag back up and keep running. This assumes your team isn't a bunch of retards, of course.

I've been playing this off and on today and I've had a neat discovery. I am without a doubt the worst Halo player of all time.

Damn, that second video had some rather nice sticky work.

Nice, I'll give this a shot. What's the range on the shield explody thing? And do you have to wait until it runs completely out, or does it go off at any point if you release the button?

You have to hold it to the end, I think it's around 4 or 5 seconds? I'm not sure. But there is a counter for it. If you are good at throwing grenades and if you time it right, you can throw a grenade at the guard, it will blow him up right after the emp goes off. Also, the emp seems to have a rather short range. Not as short as point blank, but it should be fairly easy to avoid. Lots of people complaining about it just the same, though.

Still, of all the four abilities, armor lock is the best. Camo being a close second.

There is also another mode of play where everyone is an elite. Elites even have their own class ability. It's a super dodge. I haven't played or watched a match like that yet, but my brother did and he said he got the hammer right away and within 4 minutes, he had 46 kills out of the 50 needed to win the match because he really got the hang of the dodge. Plus, he said the hammer lunges you forward kinda like the sword can in Halo 3.

I finally got into the elite deathmatch gametype, it is awesome. One of my favorites so far.

I don't recall. The way my brother was talking, it really lunges you forward now. Like, for real.

They probably increased it to match the sword lunge range. The hammer range was pretty small (you're there when the reticule turns red) and sword users or shotgun users could always take you out before a hammer would hit. Probably just trying to equalize things.

So....

Who's picking this up?

I'm typically a CoD player, but I'm really interested in Reach for a game that'll actually have some longevity to it instead of just one year wonders like the last few CoD games.

Do they actually give you a good campaign on this one? Like one longer than 6 hours?

Halo: Reach is a fantastic package, with several core components that on their own can outclass many other games. The campaign is excellent, backed by solid storytelling and a powerful audio-visual experience. The competitive multiplayer is familiar, yet brand new with a lot more options and a faster pacing. And the cooperative Firefight arcade mode has finally met its potential. Whether you like playing with friends like me or you're more of a lone wolf, Halo: Reach has evolved to the point where it'll make everyone happy. It's a fitting end to Bungie's involvement with the franchise, one that both references the past and injects new life into a tried and true formula. Newcomers and Halo fans alike will find plenty to love in Halo: Reach. Even if you've grown tired of the Halo formula through the years, I'd still recommend this game to you. It's just that good.

Updated the thread title, we can use this as the main Reach Thread. Reviews are looking good, I'm excited to get my copy from Amazon. I'm hearing Bungie did themselves proud on their last Halo title.

The lack of Master Chief and the step backwards in regards to healthpacks means I won't pick this one up for a long, long time.

I managed to find this at the Family Video nearby this morning at open. The best part, I'm a new member and rentals are still half off for the rest of the month. This means, Halo Reach for 5 nights for $3.50, or 10 for $7 which isn't a bad deal. Considering I don't have high speed any longer, I shouldn't need much more than that to complete the single player campaign.

I picked up Reach today at lunch. I was able to get the standard edition game for $60, and BB gave me a $20 gift card with my purchase. Yay!

I won't be able to play it until tomorrow evening at the earliest, though.

One of the people in Sci-Fi/Fantasy Lit skipped class for Reach. He came back and was utterly pleased with it.
