Will probably be starting to play WoW with some school friends of mine (albeit for me, very casually), and was wondering about class/race choices.

I really want to play a Death Knight, but have to first get a toon up to 55 in order to play one, correct? So until then, I was thinking of maybe playing either a Mage or a Rogue. I will probably have some PL help, but which would be easier to level? Also, are the racial bonus game breaking at all, or are they just more style like things?

Brand new to this game, thanks for the advice!

I've found Mages to be fairly easy to level. Rogues have some advantages for questing quickly with the use of stealth to get past some things.

Don't pick a race for the racials though, I believe they said they are all being re-designed during the next expansion anyway.

Hunters & Warlocks are also very easy to level.

I actually found hunters to be the easiest to level (once past level 10 where you get the pet) and have the fastest leveling record for all my alts (80 in 3 weeks with total play time of under 3 days)
If you are only seeking to use it as a step up for your DK then you would not really need to worry about racials, as Uinan said there will be a revemp coming up in cataclysm (late 2010).
DK wise, considering your play style as well as the professions you'll be going with. Are you pvp or pve more? If pve do you want to play a tank or a dps? If pvp will you be taking engineering or two gathering skills for the minor buffs?
Once you get to the dk part, I'm sure lots of people here will give you more advice.

If you're just looking to get to 55 as fast as possible, your best choice is probably hunter or warlock.

Between rogue and mage, I'd probably go rogue. I'm leveling a mage right now, and there is a significant jump in down time from leveling rogues. I'd say a rogue is quicker just due to not having to worry about mana, and as pointed out already, stealthing to objectives can save tons of time as well.

When you get to 55 and switch to dk, you'll get to find out how ridiculous they can be, even with all the nerfs they've taken since the expansion came out.

Future note to self: level all new classes while they're still hugely overpowered, before they get nerfed every patch.

ps: still hoping some mmo will put out a rogue/mage hybrid. I probably wouldn't play anything else ever again as long as it was done well.

I just dinged 56 on my Paladin. I found it to be very fast to level. 4 days played so far.

Hunter and warlock level fastest, but are the least likely to be a useful alt. Most everyone has one.

Paladin or druid level fairly quickly, with paladin being slightly better because it trains you to play a death knight to a minor degree. Also, you could use it as a storyline thing.

Mage is handy to level at a certain point when you can AE things down, but prior to that are squishy and all about mobility or CC.

Rogue is one class I have not tried properly.

I'd say shaman > rogue for leveling because of the heals and the versatility, but I've only done moderate leveling with my shaman.

Let us know what you choose.

Rolled an undead Warlock on Agewynn (sp?) and got to level 12. Playing with my friend and her Tauren Druid. Insanely easy game to play z0mg. 2 hours of play time.

Hehe, 1 day total played time, level 36 Warlock named Schwer. This game is fun.

Heh. Keep in mind that they nerf the exp needed to lvl with each new level cap. Their stated goal is that they want it to take about a month of casual play to get to lvl cap, so when they raised the cap to 80, lvls 1-70 got easier.

Yeah I can vouch for the fact that it's much easier to level this time around. I've spent time on crafting and exploring and it's still going quick. If you do refer a friend I'm sure it's extremely fast.

Yeah, refer a friend's 3x multiplier for quests has been the majority of my exp. It's slick.

Remember that RaF only works until 60...but those are the levels you need it for, anyway since things fly by in Outland and Northrend.

Heh, I'm just trying to get to 55 so I can play a DK. But the Warlock has been super fun so far.

The Voidwalker bubble ability makes me feel a bit OP.

Loki:

I have the advantage of Heirloom Items (combined +20% Quest and Kill Experience) and being able to play only when my characters are completed rested. At very low levels, this amounts to literally minutes at a time. However, as soon as my Rest Experience depletes, I hearth to the appropriate inn for my questing zone and log.

Hit 52 last night, will probably make 55 this weekend. As such, I plan on rolling a DK, and could really use some advice. I don't care too much about min-maxing, I'd like to play a life-tapping 2-hander DPS/Tank (Similar to a SK from EQ :P ) if at all possible.

Good blood builds for a 55? Will probably be soloing and duoing with a healer friend.

Thanks a ton!

Unless they changed things, you start off at 55 and spend a few levels doing quests in an instanced zone. I believe you don't get any skill points at first... by the time you finish up you're close to 60 though, and have all the appropriate skill points, but they're earned via quests, or were last time I played...

Edit: I usually hit Elitist Jerks for ideas on builds, you can min/max, or just go with the recommended builds. This is their guide for blood.

You start your DK at 55 with 0 talent points.

By the time you leave the starting area, you are 58 and have 49 talents and an epic speed mount.

On top of that, check out talentchic.com.

Decent site with guides to builds, glyphs, etc.

Oi, thanks so much you guys! Made 58 last night on my Warlock (1 day 22 hours played), and after I finish installing the expansions will try out a DK.

I was curious as to the optimal number of characters to "juggle" so that they all stay rested. I would assume it would be a large amount as you can easily run out rested xp in an hour or slightly more at the higher levels.

Of course, this depends on how fast you can burn through the rest xp and this time increases as you ascend in level. I've still found the fastest way to level is to RaF yourself with a second account. The experience is insane.

I level my lower level (under 60) chars in 2 level bursts, I'm rotating between 3 when they have rest exp.

It takes about a week (week and a half?) to build up a decent amount of rest exp.

Made an orc DK, and I think I really like this class. The starting area and constantly changing quests was super cool. And I really like how the runes function. Neat stuff.

Made it to 60, weee!
