Well, I should say that my wife got it for me/the family for Father's Day. My first gaming console ever. No, seriously. I was never cool enough or geeky enough to get an Atari when I was a kid.

Just curious if any of you have good game recommendations (and I realize many of you will say there are none for this system). I played the "aviation" games in Wii Sports Resort last night, and rather liked it ... I also like Fantasy FPG games, some swordplay ... and historical, turn-based simulations, but I guess that's not really an option for this system. Anyone heard anything good about "Sin and Punishment"? Hasn't come out yet, looks kind of fun.

And, heck, you can even chime in to tell me that I'm hastening the downfall of Western gaming civilization. But, I got a kick out of watching my five-year old beat the tar out of people in the swordfighting game, so it was fun and achieved part my wife's purpose, at least. Have to get another controller and show him the ropes. :D

My wii is heavily used for Netflix streaming on a daily basis, since it is in our bedroom.

But the console shines as a party game machine. Any games that allow groups of people to have fun are always a good bet. Big Brain Academy is a family favorite.

I enjoyed the Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles games. They are on rails light gun shooters, so I don't know how much you would enjoy them. The only other game I enjoyed on the Wii was Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, which is a turn based RPG-Strategy hybrid game.

But, since this is your first console, rockband and guitar hero should be recommended as well. They are good times when you have other people to play with. Not so much alone, however. Mario Cart would probably also fit into that "really fun when not playing alone" category.

If you want to play with the kids (and friends), get Mario Party, Mario Kart and Rayman Raving Rabids.

We've enjoyed both Mario galaxy's, Twilight Princess. So far, in our experience, Boom Blox Bash Party is one of the best party games ever. It's like Jenga in reverse, very easy to pick up and play.

Cool, folks, thanks for the recs. I guess it's about time to enter the Zelda world ... I've heard of Cave World, looks kind of interesting.

I don't think I even realized you could do Rock Band or Guitar Hero on the Wii. I foresee drumming in my son's future.

If you don't see me here again, you can find me behind a console.

Wii is great for at least a year or so. Once you get over the giddiness of the parties, you could sit down with some single player games like zelda or resident evil. Unfortunately they haven't put out any really good games recently though.

If you haven't tried Super Mario Galaxy 2, it's pretty good.

I'll second this. I never bought the game but I had an f-ing great time with it when the console launched. I'll have to download it and rekindle my love for launching offroad trucks 500 feet through the air.

Depending on the game, you can consider the Dolphin emulator. It runs great and from what I hear plays Wii games pretty much flawlessly. The Gamecube game compatibility is good for the most part, but certain games continue to have unfixed issues because dev work is focused mainly on Wii.

Thanks for the Excite Truck rec. My son would love this, I know.

Oh, and guess who beat the tar out of me last night in Swordplay?! Yes, my 5-year old. I'm alternately embarassed, and proud.

Sin and Punishment doesn't pique your interest? I'm not that much into shooters, but it looks interesting.

It's okay. I don't either. Hell, even back when all I had was a NES with the one game Duck Hunt/Super Mario Bros. combo, I spent all of my gametime playing Duck Hunt.

My son already wants a Mario game, so I'm sure I'll buckle eventually. I'm probably the only person on the planet who enjoyed the Mario movie, come to think of it.

I don't know if a Wii is considered "the dark side." Maybe the "Dork Side." /rimshot
