Today is the day that Blizzard killed World of Warcraft. Their new optional service, Real ID ...

Well, just read for yourself ...

http://us.battle.net/realid/?rhtml=y
Quote:
What information about me will other players see when I use Real ID?
If you are using Real ID, your mutual Real ID friends, as well as their Real ID friends, will be able to see your first and last name (the name registered to the Battle.net account). You will also be able to see the first and last name of your Real ID friends and their Real ID friends. Your Battle.net account name (your email address) is not displayed to other players through the Real ID friends list. In addition, players with Real ID relationships will be able to view each other's online status, Rich Presence information, and Broadcast messages, and will be able to see which character and game their Real ID friends are playing across supported Blizzard games.
I think this means game over for me as Blizzard will inevitably make it mandatory before or at the launch of Cataclysm.

Actually, more research reveals that the Real ID software will be running on all World of Warcraft enabled Battle.net accounts by default; and, short of invoking the parental controls mechanism which requires providing a hard copy of your RL ID to Blizzard, you cannot disable it.

Account canceled. Permanently.

World of Facecraft?

Sounds horrible. Especially when it comes to stalkers.

Even if they make it mandatory, based on what I just read from their site, if you don't have any Real ID friends, you won't show up on anyone's list and no one will have access to your RL name.

I would agree its unfortunate they are touting this "new" service without having worked out all the features/implementation, such as parental controls - more information later is a big grab bag of questions.

I also agree its unfortunate they chose to use real names instead of some universal BNet Account name.

But I'm curious what you see that makes you think this is the end of the game.

Hmm... I misread that the first time. That seems pretty weird and disconcerting.

Ladas:

Because the Blizzard definition of opt-in is accepting a RealID Friend's request. The software is already running on every account. And that's that ...

I won't be playing. I won't be buying Cataclysm. I don't purchase StarCraft II. I will vote with my wallet. Unlike the games with heavy offline components, I'm already jacked into this database. And it's not opt-in in any sense where I can flip a switch. By the by, the Parental Controls issue was handed via their Parental Control email system. This is how the general public found out that RealID will be turned on by default.

Yeah, this is the only part with which I have a problem. If this element were removed, I think I'd probably be completely in favor of the service. Taamar and I add our friends D & L to our "Real ID Friends" list, and we then get to chat with them even if they're playing Alliance alts on another server? All their characters get added to our friends list automatically (something already done in Guild Wars, for example)? We see their real names instead of having to add notations to our friends list or have really good memories in order to keep straight which character belongs to which person? Yeah, all sounds pretty good - except for that part about being visible to "friends of friends" which can easily get scary.

How is this much different than real-life? You cannot control if your friends tell their friends that you are friends... ah... something along those lines anyways.

It's a privacy issue. And the new layer of interaction further compromises accounts and increases the black market value of accounts and battle.net IDs.

Real Life Friends Feature and Identity Disclosure. The Service allows you to disclose your identity to other users of the Service through the "Real Life Friends" feature. If you use the Real Life Friends feature and opt-in to a request to be "Real Life Friends" with another user, that user will be able to see your real name. Certain features, such as the Battle.net Voice Chat Client, are only available between users of the Service who have opted in to the Real Life Friends feature. IF YOU OPT-IN TO THE REAL LIFE FRIENDS FEATURE, THOSE PEOPLE YOU DESIGNATE AS "REAL LIFE FRIENDS" WILL BE ABLE TO SEE THE NAMES OF YOUR OTHER "REAL LIFE FRIENDS," AND YOUR NAME WILL BE VISIBLE BY THOSE PEOPLE THAT YOUR "REAL LIFE FRIENDS'" HAVE DESIGNATED USING THE SAME FEATURE. You may opt out of the Real Life Friends feature at any time by deleting all Real Life Friends from your Battle.net Account.
This means that the feature is implemented already in game. Consequently, to not use the feature, I must actively not allow other people add me to their use of the feature. I find that unacceptable.

sounds simple enough. you deny all friends requests and tell people "sorry I'm not using RealID"

If they make it manditory, can them.

Software is already running. Should not have to deny these things to play a game.

Sue them for release of confidential information.

Class action lawsuit.

Except that they have the "opt in" defense.

Actually, they apparently listened to their customer based. Functionality to disable Real ID which was not present on PTR is now on live servers, which were delayed by a good 8 hours today.

So does that alter your course of action?

This has been a topic of contention in StarCraft 2 circles as the beta update at one point made real ID the only way to add friends. However, the blues from the forums have stated that it wasn't to be so for the release of SC2. I assume they wanted to test the system, by making it mandatory. It made it impossible to add friends except by using a work around.

The whole real ID thing makes no sense to me anyway. It's a feature that serves no purpose. Like I couldn't tell real life friends my regular ID? Facebook? Why? I blame Kotick. **** that guy.

The remaining annoyance I have is that the last indications I saw are that voice chat will only be available to Real ID friends.

Unless it's much better than the in-game WoW voice chat, I'll still be using ventrilo.

Well, I used it in the SC2 beta before they made it a linked feature. It was fine. Also, ventrilo, in a random ladder 2v2 game? Good luck. I'll be killing you while you and your teammate are sharing vent info.

True, playing with random people would be hard. I bet the quality is much better in SC as well, simply due to game format.
