I was digging through an old box of CDs and I found my QFG Anthology and QFG5 game discs. This was my favorite game series when I was younger, so I dusted off the discs and took a trip down memory lane. I must say that playing a mid-90s DOS game on my quad core Win7 64 bit system was a bit of a shock. I was running the game through DosBox, so I didnt' have many issues with compatibility. But even playing the VGA remake of QFG1 was a bit hard on the eyes. But it was an awesome experience, trying to remember the various puzzles and having to level up my character again.

I finished QFG1 late last night, so I started looking at QFG2. I then found out that an authorized remake of QFG2 was created in 2008. Sweet! Downloaded it and started it this morning. The graphics are still rather primitive, but I'm going more for a nostalgia and gameplay experience than cutting edge graphics.

Where did you get the new QFG2? Steam?

I enjoyed the first one thoroughly (though I only played the VGA remake). It was like King's Quest, except it had a lot more RPG elements added to it. I especially liked how you could play different classes, and your gaming experience did change based off of it. If you were a thief you could sneak in and out of town via climbing the wall, rob houses, etc. I also liked how your character had stats that could improve with enough practice.

The game had a perfect blend of adventure, fantasy, and humor. To this day I still think of "This goblin was the unlucky winner at poker last night" when I search through bodies in games and find no loot.

It's a freeware release. I found it mentioned on the QFG2 Wikipedia page. I can find the URL when I get back to work, but you can probably find it sooner.

I've completed QFG 1-4 with a Magic User/Wizard. 1-3 ran pretty well, no real issues, as long as you can stomach 320x200 resolution 256 color graphics. QFG4 had a bunch of issues. I had to download some patches for the game, and I ended up having to tweak my DosBox settings to get the game to work properly. But once I got that setup, I was able to complete the game.

QFG5, though was a different story. This game, created in 1998, is a Windows game, not DOS, so I can't use DosBox as an emulator. All sorts of graphical glitches. I had to install a patch just to get it to run on a 64-bit OS, and even then it ran very badly. I ended up getting a Win98 virtual machine image and installing that. There are still some weird graphical glitches, but it's playable, at least.

QFGV apparently runs fine in Wine.
