Xbox Live Pricing Increase

1 month = $10.00

3 month = $25.00

12 month = $60.00

Nov 1st


Not a huge deal I suppose if you go with the yearly, but still . . . booo for pricing increases.

Yeah my thoughts, too. I guess I just hate seeing the actual increase of already high prices. The way it goes, I guess . . .

$5/month is a "high price?" Hell, I wish most of my bills were that low.

It's still better than Sony's useless Playstation Plus service. I pay for that only because Hulu Plus isn't available on the 360. At least Nintendo still has the decency to not charge anything for offering nothing.

Yeah, I'm not sold on PSN Plus myself. They need to offer a lot more than they currently do before I plunk down the cash.

Their free service is just fine.

Looks like Hulu plus will be hitting the 360 in 2011 (one of their justifications for the price hike).

This is from their promo e-mail they sent me to tell me they'd be charging me more moneys.

Good news everyone, Wendy's increased the price of a single w/ cheese combo because next year they are planning on rolling out some sweet new cheeses (pepperjack*, swiss*, monterey*). In order to prepare you for these exciting new cheeses they are bumping the cost of the single from $3.25 to $3.80 effective immediately.

I never play online with consoles, so I look more for actual d/l content.

Like I said above, unless PSN Plus starts offering way more than they do now, I'll pass and stick with the free service.

PSN Free offers plenty of nice things IMO.

It has nothing to do with that. Even if the PS3 is not your preference, all you have to do is log into PSN and see that it offers many good deals and good content.

And no one on this forum should be calling anyone out for being a fanboy without realizing that they are one themselves. Everyone on here is a fanboy of something (lot of 360 fanboys for example). Just because something on here is not popular does not mean its supporters are fanboys (in the negative connotation way).

It's hard to call anyone a fanboy when they own every system, though. It's foolish to think that any two non-identical systems are going to perform equally in any given category. XBL is better at matchmaking, there's really no debate there. Aside from that, the game update process on PS3 is **** atrocious.

Agree on the every system part. And the performance of different consoles.

I own everything but a Wii and a DS, but have owned them in the past. I also realize there are good games on both -- the games just aren't for me. I even own both XBL games and retails discs for the 360. Own several PC games as well.

If preferring one system over another is considered being a fanboy (in the pejorative sense), then that's sad.

That said, I am not going to get into another "what constitutes a fanboy" debate, so I'll end it there.

As for the matchmaking, I can't comment, as I haven't played any online console matches in many moons, and both systems have gone through updates since then.

The updates on PS3 are longer, yes, but I don't know the specifics of what these updates are doing (from a hardware/software perspective).

Are they good deals when publishers resort to jacking up prices, opting to not pursue free DLC, or making DLC they have committed to offering limited by revoking availability after time passes?

Because that's what "free" PSN forces developers to consider, because Sony makes the developers pay, rather than the user.

The DLC/Add-Ons seem pretty fairly-priced to me. Small add-ons = cheap, larger add-ons = more expensive.

As for availability, I can't say as I've seen stuff just disappear from PSN, but it would make sense if said content was selling poorly and the space it takes up on the servers could be better used by something more popular.

And, as a point of clarification, when I say free service, I mean free in that you don't have to pay a recurring fee for the service itself. There's plenty of add-on content you have to pay for on XBL in addition to the monthly/yearly/whatever.

Personally, I am someone who owns both a PS3 and a 360. I have played games online on both systems. I will agree with Rodahn, if you are a single player person who never plays online or chats, or forms a party, you will most likely enjoy a very similar experience on both consoles.

However, if you would like to go online, ever, the 360 beats the PS3 hands down. Almost every social aspect of the service is superior. It helps that MS built the original Xbox partially as a testing ground for their Live service, and it's essentially had 5 years more refinement than Sony's service, but at this point, who cares. All we care about is the experience RIGHT NOW, and right now Live stomps the competition.

Rodahn -- Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 had downloadable content that was removed from both PSN and Live! because the developers didn't want to keep paying Sony to make it available. Contractual obligations with Sony to ensure that all DLC available elsewhere was made available on PSN forced them to take it down from Live! at the same time.

Thus, your X-Box needed to go in for repair? Can't re-authorize the content, because it's been removed from Live! And it's the fault of a company you never even necessarily gave your custom.

Actually, it was more about Activision's license with Marvel expiring, rather than the pennies for bandwidth when the DLC was downloaded.

When they were charging 9.99 for a relatively small download, the 16 cents per gigabyte isn't exactly a money loser.

10 dollars a year isn't really a big deal, but I wish I could get use of the features being added that have caused this upcoming increase. Specifically the ESPN3 thing - I can't use it because my ISP doesn't support it at all. Infact, most of the ISPs here don't support it in my area despite being on ESPN3's big list.

Except, Activision pulled a ton of other content from the PSN with it ...

And Activision's license with Marvel didn't expire in any way that prevented them from honoring previous purchases on the XBL Network.

Seems coincidental that it was the same week the licenses expired that the DLC was pulled then. Marvel's licenses are mixed up and fractured enough to cause all kinds of fun sometimes. (IIRC, it was why Hulk ended up as DLC in the first one instead of with the original game.)

Just seems out of the 2 possibilities (license agreements for a game that sold poorly on one hand, vs a few pennies of bandwidth charge per 10 dollar sale...ie, less cost than if they'd packaged the DLC as a disc)...

It seems a REAL stretch to blame bandwidth costs as the reason it was pulled.
