LOTRO has switched to a Free to play model, very similar to the model that Dungeons & Dragons Online is using. Not surprising since they are both by Turbine.

Anyone else going to be checking it out? I started an elf hunter on Brandywine a few days ago. I'm digging it so far. Not sure how I'll like it in the long run, but it's worth a shot if you were ever on the fence about it before.

I have some chacters in this game somewhere. Don't recall where.

I might give it another try at some point, but right now EQ1 is holding my interest.

Yeah, I played for a little bit on a beta invite myself. I'll probably create an account and dink around now that it's F2P, but I don't yet know how far I'll go with it.

You can earn enough points to buy all of the quest packs and expansions. Or so they say. Grinding out those deeds can get rather tiresome, though. Skirmishes are incredibly fun, however.

I played for a while on live and enjoyed it. Then got wrapped up in WoW. Installing it now to give it another whirl.

Been playing since the beginning (2007) and still absolutely love it! Welcome to all those giving it a go for the first time. :)

Really enjoying this, so far. Got my Elf Hunter to level 22. The scenery so far is just amazing. The elf lands are very beautiful, and I was also really impressed with the landscape around Bree and The Shire. I also really love the wardrobe and outfit system. You have your equipment which is like any other MMO, but you can choose to slot other items in your outfit slots, and have those items "show" instead. For instance, instead of just turning a really ugly helmet off, you can equip a really cool looking hat or hood in your "Outfit 1" head slot, and show that item on your character instead. It's kinda like switching gear out in WoW for cosmetic reasons, but you actually keep the stats of whatever's in your equipment tab. Pretty cool for those of us that are a bit more fashion conscious, heh.

The quests are pretty fun, especially the "Epic" quest-line, which basically has you helping out the Ring-bearer or the Fellowship, in a behind the scenes sorta way. You may not actually interact with them, but you stopped a nearby patrol of orcs that was very close to discovering their position, or something like that. It's pretty cool, and sometimes, you do get to actually met people like Aragorn and Gandalf.

The best part, for me, though, has been the music. Not the in-game music, but playing our own instruments. All classes can play at least one of the basic instruments, such as a lute, or a flute. And only the minstrel can play them all. Once you equip your instrument, you type /music, and you can use your hotkeys to play notes. Or you can go somewhere like www.thefatlute.com, and download songs that have been composed/converted to ABC format. Once you save these files in your music folder, you can play them in-game by typing /play <songtitle>. The best part is, that some songs have multiple parts for different instruments, so you can literally play them together as a band, with the /play <songtitle> sync command. I heard a trio of musicians playing the Star Wars cantina music the other day. Heh, Very cool stuff.

As far as the F2P stuff, you should have enough Turbine Points saved up by your early 20's to purchase the Lone Lands quest pack, which should easily get you into your 30's. Also, don't forget that Turbine Points are account wide, so you can grind them with multiple characters. However, I ended up liking the game so much that I subscribed anyway. I'm just really having a blast with it so far.

I restarted my account as well and have been having fun. It's been a really nice change of pace from WoW. The one thing that LOTRO has always been good at is immersion. It's much more of a mmoRPG than any of the ones I've seen in a long time.

I always thought LOTRO had some of the most beautiful MMO landscapes.

Indeed.

I still remember wandering around the Old Forest and finding Tom Bombadill when I played the first time. That whole area was truly magical.

And there's a view in North Bree, near the river that's just breathtaking. I'm really eager to see what the Mines of Moria are like. I have to imagine they are similarly captivating.

It's nice to see the increased activity in the starter areas. While I don't care for all of the changes introduced with f2p (immersion taking a back seat to convenience and performance) I do think it is overall a good and healthy change to keep the game sustained in the long run.

My wife is playing this now. Her biggest gripe is that dwarves can't be females. Or, that they are androgynous and that females really look too male-ish.

I may try it out at some point. To be quite honest, the biggest thing that kept me from this game (aside from the fact that I hate paying for multiple MMOs) is the fact that LOTR is too mainstream now. I suppose it's less so than it was 5 years ago. But when things I like start getting too popular and mainstream, I tend to start shying away from it.

I'm on the Riddermark server as Aizle. It's actually a very new server, only like 5-6 weeks old apparently, so there's little mudflation yet, and lots of folks around questing and what not in the lowbie areas. Kinda nice.

I'm on Windfola.

I have a Grand Master Tailor (Hiltz) & GM Woodworker (Odom) if anyone needs something made for their toon. Just send a message with the password, 'Orc Messenger spotted!' or just let me know you are from The Glade and I will do my best to make something worthy for you to wear or wield. :)

I just finished Volume 1, Book 5. I have to say it was pretty epic. Very glad they put in the inspiration buff so everyone can experience the epic quest line.

I thought I would share with any of you starting or returning to lotro my personal favorite forum post. I play a champ and since all of you will either play or group with one at some time, you should be educated on the champ's proper role in groups.

Quote:
3 things a champion would like you to know... cause I hate you and want you to cry..

I read a lot of things about champions on the forums, and I think it's time to clear up some misunderstandings. First, understand that the only way to win an encounter is by killing the mobs. This is through DPS. And because of our great AOE DPS, champions are the most important member of the group. But we fill other roles as well. Mostly, we optimize fellowships. How? Because we know these things:

1. Minstrels are lazy. I mean, come on. To do our max DPS, we need to be in Fervour, which has a -30% healing penalty. This just means that the minstrel must heal us 30% more. But sometimes they complain about this. This makes no sense. They rolled a healing class to heal, and now they get to heal 30% more! They should be thanking us. If someone said to me "Do 30% more DPS" I'd say "OK!"

Minstrel carry around lutes and wear fancy hats. We need to keep them on their toes, or they will drift off and start daydreaming about butterflies, fancy hats, and butterflies in fancy hats.

2. Loremasters are afraid of almost everything. Seriously. All of their skills are based around this. They mez and root to keep the scary things away. If that fails, they debuff it, so it seems a little less scary to them. And they have pets to help keep things away from them, and to have someone to cuddle with in case they have a bad dream or something.

Champions are not afraid. We are there to AOE DPS, and not hitting things is counterproductive. So we must break every mez we see. And the purpose of roots is to keep everything together so it is easier to AOE it all.

Don't worry, little LM. The mighty champ will save you, even if you are just some weirdo in a bathrobe.

3. Raging Blades is the best skill ever. It hits a lot of targets, hits them hard, and adds threat. There is nothing not awesome about this. And it makes an awesome noise. SHING-SHING! When the fellowship hears that, they know it's go time! SHING-SHING! OMG, it's so awesome I would do it constantly if I could. Too bad its on a 10 second cooldown.

Sometimes, a guardian or a warden will say "Don't charge in there and Raging Blades before I get good aggro" but really what they mean is "I'm totally jealous of that skill. Please don't use it and make me look like a wuss. I want to run up to those mobs and like yell at them some, and then pound on my shield menacingly. Ooh I'm so tough." Hahaha. To bad, it's DPS time! SHING-SHING!

Then they'll say things like "Well, if you can't hold back, then at least Ebbing Ire on to me." But they do not understand to purpose of Ebbing Ire. It is used to punish lorebreakers. If I'm ever grouped with an RK an I think he's out DPSing me, I'll Ebbing Ire on to him. Take that lorebreaker! Behold the wrath of Tolkien!

If I could pick them up and throw them into a well Darth Vader-style, I would.

Just realize that while champions are awesome, we want you to be awesome too. That's why we do the things we do.
