I suddenly remembered this morning that I once played, saw, or heard about a game (might have been an MMO, might not have been) in which the specific recipe that you learned for crafting a particular item was somewhat randomized. The interface would let you know when you learned the 'most efficient' recipe possible, and you could "forget" and "relearn" until you got that one.

It's a mystery.

Sounds kind of like real life. Find a better recipe, throw the old one away.

I have to admit to being a bit mystified by the description.

It's been a long time since I played, but Anarchy Online had a system where you could end up crafting different QL (Quality Level) items based on the QL of the inputs.

Each resulting item had specific requirements to use it, and requirements were quality level based. The stats of the item were linear but segmented, so QL 35 gun might do 11 to 22 damage, and the same for QL 36, 37, and 38, but then QL 39 would go up to the next damage level, 12 to 24.

The requirements, being more granular, might go up up every QL. So your QL 35 gun would require, I don't know, 32 INT, a QL 36 would require 33 INT, etc...

So in the end, a QL 35 gun would do the same damage as a QL 36, but the 36 would be harder to wear, stat-wise. Since the QL 35 gun had lower requirements, the wearer could be lower level (good for twinking) or could focus their stat points in a different area.

This demand for very specific parts drove up the prices and rarity of certain quality level components.

Might be, in which case I came by my information secondhand rather than firsthand, which would explain why I remember it so poorly.
