Minecraft is kind of a fusion between a sandbox game and survival-horror. It takes place in an infinite, randomly generated voxel-based world. Think: a world constructed entirely of legos. The different types of legos (dirt, stone, wood, iron, coal, etc.) can be put to various uses. It's about mining, crafting, building, cultivating, exploring, exploiting, and spelunking in "**** huge" cave systems for so long that you can't remember where you are or how many days it's been since you've seen the sun. And it's about survival. Unlike many sandbox games, in Minecraft, things are trying to kill you. Darkness breeds monsters that are all trying to kill you in various ways (unless you're a wuss and play on peaceful).
With the addition of "redstone", you can create various types of circuits to control doors, mine tracks, and TNT, giving rise to subway systems, combination locks, booby traps, cannons, and all manner of other wankery. You can even use it to make logic gates, if you just feel like nerding out and building a computer in your computer.
The game is highly free-form, so you can do/build pretty much whatever you want. In one of my current worlds, I've built a roughly "to-scale" floating FF4-style airship as my primary residence, for instance.
If you want an amusing, addictive, but slightly-less-than-useful introduction, Yogscast has been pretty popular lately.
If you want a more vanilla, informative introduction to the game, a lot of people seem to like SeaNanner's "letsplay" of Minecraft. Haven't watched them myself.
A few of my favorite videos:
"Pig, this is your finest hour."
Quote:
This glorious device propels animals at a ludicrous speed. Powered by 73 TNT that are dropped inside a single water trench. A whole mess of redstone connects every racks.
Also the very first step of my space program, still have to hear from pig tho. Watch his launch full-screen and at max resolution, the night is too dark.
UPDATE : Pig and the minecarts were never seen again. I have walked for a few minecraft days in the direction of the launch, with no success. It's time to call off the search. RIP Pig.
Creeper happens:

I blame Seananners & his huge Youtube following for causing this game to become so big. I'd love to know just how many people he's been connected to getting them to try this game based on his video's on his channel as well as Machinima.

Bleh. Okay, I just watched the first couple of those, and he's incredibly annoying. And also completely disorganized. If you want to know how to make ****/do things, just go read the wiki. If you want to be entertained, watch Yogscast.

Yeah, Expecting much from Seananners for that type of game is a bit much.
He is however a god at Call of Duty and has a hell of a following as a commentator doing that stuff. I think he broke 200k subs recently. I'm happy with 10k Subs. lol
If you really want to understand Minecraft, read this blog.
It's likely better for someone experienced because they can anticipate the punchline at times, but it's a brilliant and stirring 'This is why Minecraft is awesome.' exposition.

I've seen that guy's blog but haven't actually read it until now.

I’m alive. I bound up the steps to my cove home and splash around in the bay. I’m alive! I punch a pig in the face until it explodes in a shower of pork chops, and scarf them raw. I’m alive! I look up, mid-chew, to find another pig staring at me. I’m alive, pig! Don’t judge me!
This is the best thing ever.

Bah. Last time I saw that blog, it was only on, like, Day 7, and I thought it was complete!

Ok that blog sold me. What do I need to do to get started?
At a bare minimum you'll need 15 eurobux ($20 USD) and Java. Payment was by way of Paypal back when I bought it, but I think you only need a credit card, not a paypal account. You can buy it here.
If you want to spruce things up a bit, you might also install a alternate texture pack. Here are some of the more popular ones:
* These are 32x32 textures. You will need the latest version of the HD Texture Fix patch for these to work correctly.
You may also want the MRMMods patch. This provides 4 different patches, but I forget what 2 of them are. The main draw is the BetterLight patch, which adds ambient occlusion and smoother lighting, and BetterGrass, which handles the way grass tiles "wrap" a little better. BetterLight/AO is really great with Tronic especially.
Anyway, that's all you need to get started. I think I've found a way that I can get a server going for ~$1 per player, but I'm still looking around. I may get something going this afternoon/evening.

I'm down. I have Minecraft, or I paid for the alpha I should say, and I love it. I haven't played it in a while due to the heavy workload I had last semester, but I'd be interested in playing with you guys.

Argh. Session expiration ate my post.
Permanent server is up now. The address is:
gladecraft.dyndns.org
I copied over the world that Mook and I messed with last night on my make-shift home PC server. We haven't actually built much, per se, but we did "civilize" a nearby cave system and we dug down to lava/diamond depth. You'll find the entrance just over the hill from the spawn point. Look up for the big column of cobblestone.
The server is "vanilla" at this point. The only mod I'm running is hMod. I may add the ServerGuard plugin in the future, though, to prevent problems with fire, TNT, and creeper explosions.
Rules:
1) Don't be a dick. 2) Use lava/fire responsibly. If you catch the trees on fire, it will likely crash the server and bring about the end of the world.
A 16-block zone around the spawn point is protected from any interaction. I.e., if you destroy a block, it will be recreated. If you place a block, it will return to your inventory, etc. This is an anti-griefing thing. I'll work on making the spawn point more obviously a "special" place. Also, somewhere that you can safely spend the night, if needed.
I'm working on setting up a mumble or vent server (the latter if I can find a decent linux client).

I added the DSMail plugin to hMod. You can now send mail to other users, even if they are offline.

There's a giant pit I uncovered in wandering the surface... it's always interesting to find those square pits because mining down one wall allows you to mine around the edge of the pit and then build a glass floor through the center and a glass ceiling on top to let light go down to the next layer you choose to floor across.
I didn't spent too long looking at it because it was getting dark and I was trying to find my way back to the spawn and entrance.
As I type, I hear the *screech* of spiders outside. If I don't make it back to base, well, I guess those pumpkins and feathers will be feeding some spiders.
Edit: I guess /home works, even if not an op. Yay. Pumpkins are gunpowder are safe!

This probably isn't what you're talking about, but...
If you see a giant square hole all the way through the world, that's just a chunk download error. Your client is missing a 64x64x128 (X,Y,Z) "chunk" of terrain that the server sent. If you try to jump in, you'll be repelled. Disconnecting and reconnecting will clear it. The same goes for phantom items, monsters, and arrows you see. The minecraft server is still very beta.
Anyway, I've added a few more mods (in the OP) that weren't explicitly mentioned elsewhere:
We now have stargates for your convenience. There's one in the main storeroom/workshop/forge, one at bedrock, and one in the "hydroponics bay". They're all connected to one another -- just right-click the sign.
The IRC plugin lets you talk on the server via IRC, and lets you see all the server chat in IRC. Also, player connects/disconnects.
Wordlguard does various things to protect the world from destruction. Right now, I just have it set so that lava won't catch terrain on fire (it still catches items and players on fire, though). I also disabled creeper terrain damage. The combat is pretty glitchy in SMP. After having a creeper teleport through the floor and instantly explode, I decided enough was enough. They still damage you, they just don't leave craters.

I have to admit, ever since I saw that video that line has stuck with me. I went to say "are you listening" to a friend of mine a week or two ago and couldn't resist adding in the pig... though as it was a female friend I had to be extra quick to explain. She is a fellow gamer geek who also played Minecraft though so it was all good!

I'm making a note here: HUGE SUCCESS
Edit:
By the way, there was a huge patch with a bunch of new content. Unfortunately, the new client is completely incompatible with the previous server release. Furthermore, the hMod server project is basically dead, and bukkit is not yet ready to take its place. So for the time being, I've shelved the old minecraft server and set up a new "vanilla" server for the sake of being able to play around with the new stuff. I don't know whether this will be a permanent world or not.

This one is even more insane. I don't know how he solved the timing issues, but it's perfect.
