The thingies in Ravenholm (where the Russian guy was) were pretty close to that.

This. Very zombie/survival horror feel to that part of the game.

Yeah, but they didn't look that that at all. The zombies in this film had human heads while the game had headcrab zombie guys that moved really slowly(except for those howling ones, but they still had headcrabs regardless).

Were there saferooms in HL/HL2? Never played the first, been a while since I played the second, and I don't remember 'em if there were. That bit made me think more of the L4D series, and the soldiers reminded me of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
