This thing is in beta and I got into the beta to try it out. I have to say, this thing is really fun (I verified with the wotc employees that there is no NDA). It's not just for 4th ed. You can search for games in 3.5, 3rd, 2nd, even 1st editons. I haven't tried anything but 4th, but I would assume the dice mechanics are incorporated for each.

It's pretty simple yet very functional in design. It is java based, so no installation of any programs. It has a built in voice chat system that is clear.

Attack rolls and damage rolls have your bonuses added in (on the right hand side) which also makes things quick and simple. I can see that once people get the hang of it, combat would go twice, if not thrice as fast as standard PnP.

You are in control of your own character, and as you move your character around the board a blue line shows the path you took (along with the enemies and other players based on turn) to give everyone an idea of how many squares you moved and exactly how you got there.

Haven't tried DMing yet but it may be my next thing to try.

Is this part of the DDI subscription?
It's dead in six months.

No clue how they're going to release it.

Wow. It's only, what, 4 years late, now? 3 years? Something like that.

By game developer standards, they're early.

Only if you're Blizzard. Hmm. Blizzard, Wizards...

Especially since there exist open source alternatives with more functionality already ...

Please provide the name of some of these... I really want to try stuff like that out. Networking a D&D game would rock.

To be fair, the 3rd party alternatives are, by necessity, much more sandboxy. The Virtual Tabletop will presumably allow you to load in your character and track encounter/daily power uses, pre-calculate power damage along with the roll without scripting them yourself (and thus having to update your scripts when you level or change gear), and will probably even integrate the many position-dickery powers into the movement interface (have a power that allows you to shift enemies? Instead of telling the DM where to shift, the power unlocks them to allow you to shift them to legal positions yourself!), if they're smart about it.

I'm curious to see, as well, whether they'll expand it to their other systems. Saga is one of their more compelling and popular systems, from what I can tell.
