I'd be pretty pissed if this happened to me. Thankfully I don't have a PS3. Are you able to log in?

I was wondering what was up last night.

I bought the new Mortal Kombat game. Popped it in and it had an update which downloaded and installed just fine. I played for an hour then decided to put in my kombat code but it wouldn't let me sign in. Woke up this morning and it gave a message saying that PSN was down for maintenance.

Yup, we ran into this trying to watch Hulu Plus last night.

I didn't realize when your system breaks down you could just say "it's down for maintenance". Silly me, I always thought you had to plan maintenance in advance, and if it breaks, it's an outage. Ballsy, Sony.

Wow, 2 comics in one day? Someone was pissed at Sony!

Took Sony long enough to speak up, but apparently hacker types were messing with the network causing intermittant outages so Sony took it down to try and beef up the network defenses.

Pretty pathetic.

Apologist much?

Anonymous has said they weren't behind any attack to bring down PSN again, and are now claiming that Sony is trying to use recent attacks as an excuse to bring down the network for an extended period.

I find it difficult to believe that Sony's network would be so much more vulnerable than Microsoft's (which has more users, consequently making it a more valuable target) or Nintendo's (which likewise has a higher user base); this strikes me as especially true after all of the difficulties Sony has had with firmware updates.```

Not to mention, the timing coincides with the first weekend after Portal 2, whose PSN/Steam integration is the pioneering venture in that partnership, unless I'm mistaken.

Making a reference to a press release is being an apologist now?

Oooooookay.

(Especially when the only personal opinion I included in it was a criticism at Sony for taking so long to say *anything*).

You guys argue in the Gaming forums as well? People here actually have strong enough feelings about PlayStation to have an opinion formed enough that they are willing to get heated over it? Crazy ****, man. Crazy ****.

Unlike the **** you guys argue about in Hellfire, the stuff in the gaming forums actually matters.

Monday Morning, Still Down. I guess they decided since it's free, they can keep it down as long as they want (no matter how much you paid for the games/content you play on it) :D

P.S. if you didn't know, it was a free Gold weekend on Xbox live, so that was pretty much the best timing ever for MS, and the worst timing ever for Sony.

So now Sony has made a statement that they don't know if personal info or credit card numbers were exposed during the intrusion. Would they make a statement like that if there was no hacking done, or am I still "apologist much?"

Still an apologist, because that's the de facto cessation of internet related services excuse for pretty much every company with a web presence on the planet ...

Yeah...cause I'm sure customers would rather hear their CC info is at risk than to think there were network difficulties. Oh...and the hack used is a proven entity.

Let's assume you're correct ...

Then ...

1) Sony failed in such an epic manner that you should immediately stop using their product.

2) Just lolz ...

I believe the timeline goes something like this ...

Sony's two major networks go down.

Sony blames Anonymous.

Anonymous says, "We didn't do it."

Sony re-blames Anonymous.

Anonymous says, "We didn't do it, but it appears highly likely you have internal server problem."

Post subject:  Re: So, what's this I hear about PSN being down?

Except for the blaming Anonymous part, which never happened. :p

This hacking is a totally different beast than the Anonymous throwing a hissy fit with DDoS attacks awhile back.

http://www.ps3hax.net/2011/04/psn-hacke ... ly-admits/

That's, so far, the best assembly of facts on the matter; especially since the source for this "proven entity" of intrusion is a ... single blogger with no sources of his own.

But, assuming that the "proven entity" you claim is true ...

http://www.platformnation.com/2011/04/2 ... work-hack/

Then Sony is beyond incompetent; they're criminally negligent.

Look up I think it's "rebug 3.55" for starters.

But yes, I'd known about the access to devnet for some time now. (Long before PSN went down)

Post subject:  Re: So, what's this I hear about PSN being down?

I did, and I laughed at the claims you and random internet blogger making unverifiable claims are making.

http://rebug.me/?p=646

Nothing here indicates that the "feature" used to hack the network exists. Moreover, assuming that the feature is in there, then that's beyond incompetent on Sony's part.

Well I've known that with rebug etc, hackers have had a field day with getting content off PSN. This was known long before the PSN going down this week.
