It amuses me that, in the accompanying press release (which Rock, Paper, Shotgun was kind enough to provide), 2k wastes no time in backpedaling as furiously as they can against previously released information, namely the notion of it being an investigative first person shooter game. Instead, they call it "tactical action," whatever that's supposed to mean. I have a strong, cynical suspicion that all that means is that they threw in some extra partners that you can give orders to, like we all remember from the days when squad-based shooters were to be the Next Big Thing (tm) in the early 2000's, before ready access to good latency multiplayer made us realize that co-op partners were infinitely smarter than their lame squad AIs. As such, I'm still seething over this whole farce, and they better start dropping information, and the right kind of it, if they want to appease this long-time X-COM fan and convince me this is more than a lame attempt to capitalize on a beloved name.

On a more promising note, it seems that Square Enix is taking its acquisition of Eidos as a serious opportunity to throw boatloads of money at classic gaming franchises to revive or reboot them. Only, this time, I like the idea, because in addition to being franchises that need to live on and see more play, they're being approached with an eye for what made them beloved to an entire generation of gamers, rather than just as a skin to throw onto whatever game they were going to make anyways to create a cow to be milked for cash. Deus Ex: Human Revolution is looking tantalizing, even if I don't agree with everything they've done, design-wise, as I've mentioned elsewhere. Now, we get a first look at the direction they want to take Tomb Raider. And I like what I'm seeing, for what they show.

Wasn't E3 supposed to have died five years ago?

What? No. They just made it a smaller, more private event.

I require more ME3 information. I wouldn't mind some Dragon Age info(either an expansion to DA2 or even a DA3 announcement). Maybe some Left 4 Dead 3? That would be awesome.

That trailer for Tomb Raider is awesome. Can't we just have a full movie like that? Do I have to play the game?

Tomb Raider - the original - rather got me into PC gaming again. I have a soft spot for the series.

That's not X-Com.

Similar to Fallout 1 and 2 vs 3... at least they were in the same world, and FO3 and FO:NV cleaved to the design intentions of the originals when they made the jump from Isometric turn based to FPS. Fallout 3 *felt* like fallout. Watching that video, it doesn't look at all like X-Com.

Highlights from Rock, Paper, Shotgun's Liveblogging coverage:

"The NFS series was really missing QTE on foot sections." (Need for Speed: The Run)

"Corridors! How I’ve waited for the day that a highly-anticipated first-person shooter featured corridors." (Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3)

"I've decided TOR is going to be good. I'm not going to let anything change that." (Star Wars: The Old Republic)

"Lots of cutsceney nonsense for TOR, which obviously has little bearing on playing the game. But of course demonstrates quite how remarkably focused on story the MMO is."

"It's just people shouting HARRY POTTER at their Xbox at the moment. This is why I'll always be a PC gamer. Just press buttons, you lazy bastards. It's really not that hard." (Some part of the huge Kinect-centric portion of MS's Conference)

"Right, now it's something about wrestlers. God! There really should be a press conference dedicated to strategy games and RPGs. Talk about terrain to me. I love terrain."

"Men are hitting other men, while another man shouts about it. I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be taking from this." (I'm presuming this is the British perspective on whatever the wrestling thing was)

"Small, waist-high walls! This is Gears of War alright." (Gears of War 3)

"That is a very big squid they're fighting. It would probably look amazing on a PC :(" (More Gears of War 3)

"I think this is the new Crytek game, formerly known as Project something or other. It's a huge-scale fantasy game about Rome. Features Kinecty sword fighting and kicking people in the teeth"

"And now the remastered Halo 1. If I was being snarky, I would say "so the Halo we had on PC like ten years ago then, when anyone could have high def at the drop of the hat?" "

"Star Wars on Kinect now. If you don't want to hear the sound of 500 grown men making sex noises, don't watch the livestream now."

"Let's just turn this into a hive of grumpy moaning about games for young people. It's what RPS does best. Apart from typos." (More Kinect-ness)

"Kinect Dance now. I guess this is probably a worse conference for Xbox gamers than it is PC gamers, in its way." (Dance Central 2)

"Imagine watching a video of all of RPS playing this together. Imagine it. Imagine it. Fear to sleep ever again." (More Dance Central 2)

" "The dawn of a new trilogy for Xbox 360." That means three new games of tedious repetition and juvenile, over-earnest uber-lore! It's the Chiefy Master! And he's not dead like nobody thought he was after all!"

EA's press conference showed the intro cinematic for SW:ToR. Also, looks like there's a new promotional video for it, too.

Par for the course on this game, the CGI cutscene is breathtaking, and the glimpses of gameplay are completely uninformative and actually pretty bland, graphically, IMO.

I was watching the EA conference and I have to say that without a doubt Battlefield 3 is the most visually impressive game I have ever seen in my entire life. There were several points there on that tank level demo that I completely forgot I was watching a game demo.

I also caught a Skyrim gameplay demo and it looks absolutely amazing in all respects. I am very impressed by the unscripted dragon encounters. It looks simply awesome.

Was completely disappointed with the SW:TOR information(or lack of information). Really dropped the ball there. Mass Effect 3 looks great...but not all that visually upgraded from ME2. I do like the omni-blade, though. Pretty neat.

Oh, and in light of Microsoft's press conference, I have to wonder about their recent statement that "Windows 8 will represent a real new push into PC gaming. Gaming will be a key component for the whole OS."

What games will be the key component.. Angry Birds?

I'm probably in the minority here(as in on this board), but I am super excited about the Halo re-release and Halo 4.

I also am interested in the Halo re-release, I'll buy that. Halo 4 I'm a little weary of with Bungie not doing it.

PS3 will have a mode where two people can play with one screen and see two completely different images (both occupying the whole screen), by wearing glasses with a 3d tv!! So cool.

So no split screen, you both sit on either side, and see a different image.

It's not PS3, it's the monitor. At least that's how I took it.

The PS3 will have games that allow that, and they're the first ones to use this technique.

The PS3 has to render each scene in full resolution, in real time, and pass it to the 3D TV as two separate images for each polarization. It can be used with any 3D TV. It's pure innovation by Sony.

It may be pure innovation, but each of their product boxes will also be 6'3" in size and weigh 300 lbs. They decided having people hack into their network to get all of your information was inefficient.

They are going to ship all new units with an identity thief from now on.

It's pretty neat, but I haven't done split screen since you could start playing games online.

*Shrug* Dark... I don't know anyone that was actually affected, and they've made pretty good on it considering the free games and free credit watching. Unfortunately Sony looks much better than Microsoft this year.
