Because action RPGs are my pet genre, and Diablo III seems intent to not come out anytime soon, I figured I'd mention Torchlight, the new Diablo clone from the makers of, well, Diablo (y'know, the ones that left Blizzard). There's a demo up on Steam. Here's the official site. Also, it's only $20. |

I'm buying my copy from Steam today. Can't wait to try it out. NephyrS wrote: Bah, the demo is only available through Steam? That kinda sucks. I gave up complaining about Steam long ago. The fact is, that there are some games that require it, and there's no getting around it. Also, the more I use it, the more I've come to like it. My friend and I regularly use the Steam Voice Chat, even when we are playing non-Steam games. It just works really well. I've now purchased many games through Steam, and I have no regrets at all. |

I really want this. I played it a bit yesterday on my dual-booting iMac, but I'd love to load it up on my laptop or work comp. I'm going to try to hold out for the coming Mac port, but I may break down and get it sooner than that. |

I've only played around with it a little bit, but it's pretty good so far. I'm really liking the character models and the details/lighting in the background. It's sort of a cross between what we've seen of D3 so far, and Fate (if any of you ever played that one). Kinda similar to WoW, in that the characters are more "cartoonish," but the art direction is really, really good. I love the way these guys look. And supposedly, if it does well enough, they plan on making a fully multiplayer version of it. Perhaps even an MMO. It'll be interesting to see where this goes. |

Whoa. You've had some good recommendations of late, Skee. Edit: The people that made the original Diablo don't work for Blizzard anymore? |

Not to mention, you might have to suffer a download service that prevents you from having to leave the house and find the store sold out or missed its shipment. And use a download service that doesn't force you to keep keys for each downloaded item or limit your # of downloads (much h9, Direct2Drive). And, you know, for multiplayer games, a program that makes it easy to see what your friends are playing and when, so you can say "hmm, I think I feel like playing with Kaffis" (yeah, it *could* happen, I suppose), and play game X instead of Y? What a silly concept. |

Haha, so the rumors I've heard about steam being a relatively malicious, CPU time stealing beast are not true? I install as few programs as I have to, if you guy say Steam is worth it, that's good enough for me. |

I downloaded the demo, and played through as a Vanquisher- it's a pretty fun little game, for all it sucks more system resources than WoW. Not sure if I'll get the full copy, but the demo was a fun couple of hours. |

I played the first level of the mines. I enjoyed it. Would be cool if there were a couple more pet choices though. |

The Battle tree is all about improving the ability to access weapons and armor early (one talent lets you lower the requirements to access weapons and another for armor while increasing the damage/damage absorbtion) and close range spells.... hell, there's even a talent that improves your dual wield damage |

Game is a pretty solid Diablo clone so far. Not sure about the graphic style (as I never really got into the WoW-esque graphics), but fun nonetheless. Seems to be a bit on the unstable side. It's crashed for no reason on me twice now. Also, has anyone figured out the transmuter NCP? I've put all kinds of different items in there and have not gotten anything to work. EDIT: FarSky wrote: Something about this guy's tone rubbed me the wrong way. Seemed to come off as an elitist PC gamer. |

This is a fun game. I'm impressed what they have put out using such a small team and short production cycle. Best $20 game I've bought in a long time. |

I've put all kinds of different items in there and have not gotten anything to work. Game runs fine for me. No crashes at all. Loads of fun, so far! For the transmuter. Put 2 identical gems in to "upgrade" and get 1 gem of the next level. That's the only thing I know about so far. Also, there's a "Respec" mod over on the official site/forums. It places a Respec potion in the general vendor's inventory, that allows you to respend all of your skill points. No refund on stat points, tho. But it is nice to try out some different skills. |

It crashes quite a lot for me- and the game only saves when you load back to town. Which means if the game crashes after I've spent an hour in a dungeon, I lose everything I was working on. From searching the forums, quite a few people are having the errors- it's a C++ runtime error with the game shutting itself off. There are also the random character deletions..... Its a good game, but still on the unstable side. |
