Seems a bit rare for a game to be this close to release with no thread created for it that I could find. The early reviews are absolutely raving about how wonderful the game is, as an all around complete package.

I myself have never been much of a gears fan until I tried their beta last spring and was blown away by the multiplayer experience. So for me personally, this will be my first real experience into the Gears of War franchise, which I'm pretty excited for something fresh(to me) to sink my teeth in. With any luck it'll be a great shooter to trade off with Battlefield 3 as my shooters of choice for the coming year.

There's no Spess Mehreen thread, either.

The Collective is planning a party the night of release; the three of us will probably play some Campaign.

I enjoyed both Gears of War and Gears of War 2. I am looking forward to Gears of War 3, but it doesn't seem very popular on the boards, so I didn't feel the need. I also notice no one has said a word about Dead Island since it came out despite it being one of the greatest games I've ever played.

I still haven't finished Gears 2, so I haven't been in a rush to get at Gears 3. One of these days, I'll be motivated to go back and get through co-op.

How is the Dead Island? I've been wondering about that one, though I've got plenty of game on my plate at the moment with Crysis 2 and Spehss Marine, and the upcoming CoH Freedom if I get an MMO itch that needs scratchin'.

I first heard about Dead Island on Ctrl Alt Del and based on his description of the game, I was sold.

That was last week, and as yet, I can't come across a Gamestop that has not sold out of it. I am still looking and, should I find it, this will push Gears 3 back to a Christmas present, likely.

Gears of war 3 is on it's way. Hoping they wrap up the trilogy beautifully, enjoyed the storyline so far.

Dead Island is like Left 4 Dead, Oblivion and Borderlands somehow had a baby of pure awesomeness.

As I have a terrible taste for Xbox360 online multiplayer, I hope Gears 3 horde and beast mode are playable offline and/or splitscreen multiplayer.

Nek:

Michael has commented that Dead Island has sold out everywhere within 120 miles of here, and he's had people asking about it.

I thought it was okay. More Gamefly okay than rush out grab it okay.

Dal:

So you've tried it, or just from what you've seen?

I did enjoy borderlands, though it just wasn't enjoyable in single player, since it had that sort of MMO feel sans one of the letters, and Left 4 Dead was pretty good as well, though the multiplayer was lacking. Oblivion was nigh unplayable on XBawks, but mods made it good on the PC. From what people are Dead Island to, sounds like my kind of game.

Khross:

Is there a game you actually like? I don't mean to be rude, and I ask the question seriously. I'm hoping you're just a hoo-man who has particular tastes, as opposed to an it's-popular-and-therefore-bad hipster. Since I presume you to be the former, I'd have to take another step and ask that you just give me an example as opposed to a lengthy dissertation on the qualities of some theoretical game you would enjoy. :p

Tried it. Trenticles has it. Michael has also tried.

The Analog control scheme acts weird, does not let me stab.

I should try with a slash button, but.

I think you could local MP in Gears 2. You could add bots too. That said, having friends you can play with on xbox live helps.

I got my copy. I can't wait to go home after work... The ArsTechnica review gave it a thumbs up. I like that they say it ends definitely. I'm sure they'll try to milk the franchise later... I just hope Carmine 3 survives. T_T

Ordered it off Amazon today with the $20 credit deal. Will be playing tomorrow (likely all day).

It's totally rad. I played it a little past bedtime with some friends from work. The new horde mode is quite nice, expanding on what we were doing to survive in GoW2.

4 player co-op in the campaign is sweet.

Clayton Carmine is my favorite Carmine. I hope he lives.

The new team deathmatch is slightly tweaked version of how games usually do TDM. Your team has a limited number of lives. So, it's like warzone, but you get to fight a bit more if you suck. :P

I haven't tried beast mode yet.

Well I just went through the first two acts in one awesome sitting. This game is sweet.

The 3D is great, too, even though none of you care :D

Khross: That's quite a varied list. I am surprised and intrigued.

On-topic: What is the 3D like? I've always wondered if it translates well into vidya games. I imagine it'd just give me a headache.

I love 3D gaming, and Killzone 3 / Gears 3 have been two of the most impressive titles I've played in that regard. The amount of depth you get playing Gears is actually quite impressive. Of course, quality of the effect is also dependent on TV type, active vs. passive 3D, yadda yadda. I'm of the opinion that recent game 3D quality trumps that of what you may have seen in Avatar.

The main downsides of 3D are thus:
1) Usually single player only, because of horsepower requirements
2) Same reason, when 3D is enabled, most games downscale texture resolution a bit
2a) This usually doesn't bother me because you get so sucked into the game when you're playing 3D, you don't really take the time to analyze if this is a 720p texture

I've never personally gotten a headache while playing, and I have arguably a more aggressive (shutter lense) setup. I know everyone is a little bit different in that regard though. Most games have an intensity slider that you can adjust if it becomes a problem. Last night I went through the first two acts of Gears with 3D set to max and I wanted to keep going. I only ended up turning it off because some people came over and I didn't have enough glasses for them all.

Neksar:

I like good games, and to a large degree ... the thing that matters most is how it plays, not how it looks. All of the games I mentioned, however, play extremely well and look extremely good for what they are. That said, if anyone compares anything favorably to Oblivion, it's immediately on the avoid permanently list.
