One (exactly!)

Ironically enough, I could see myself fiddling around with this. Not playing it seriously, or hardcore, by any means.. But I could see soloing for a few hours with the delightful combat mechanics now and then. Or even, *gasp* getting a group. The grouping was decent in that game, with just a sore lack of direction and/or variety of content by the mid-game.

I already have too many games that I don't have time to play. Damn Doctor Who is getting in the way of my SW time as it is.

That game may be the biggest disappointment of my life in terms of gaming. I absolutely loved it and it was a near-total failure.

I should check it out though now that I have a much more powerful computer.

Yeah, I pretty much agree.

I loved vanguard, even with all of it's problems. I wish it had been more successful so they could have funded more development. My experimentation with the classes led me to the Raki Psionicist. Even with the bugs, that was one of the most fun MMO characters I ever played. I tried the Ranger first, but just couldn't get into the combat mechanics.

I'll probably log in and check things out, but not until my SW:TOR playing slows down a bit. I've been having too much fun there to split my time on other games.

We've got some exciting changes in store for Vanguard!

Since many, if not all of you reading this letter are the most die-hard of Vanguard players, let me start off by saying thank you for your unwavering support of the game! Let's talk about the great things we have planned over the next few months...

Vanguard going Free-to-Play

At SOE, giving players choices is the theme of how we're moving forward as a company. We see free-to-play (or as we refer to it, Free to Play. Your Way.) as a big part of our future and we like the flexibility it offers players. Therefore, I'm happy to announce Vanguard will be the next in line of our AAA games to make this transition. Since we've literally just begun on the work, I'm not ready to go into much detail. However, I will say that you can expect something similar to EverQuest®, EverQuest® II and DC Universe™ Online when we roll-out our free-to-play offering this summer. Once we have more information to share, you'll be the first to know.

Getting the band back together...

Now for the part I'm most excited about, let's talk about the great team of developers we've assembled. To begin (and I realize I'm stating the obvious) we've had a dry spell of game updates over the past few months. That said, I'm happy to announce the drought will be coming to an end this week, with our first scheduled update since last December. We plan to roll out game updates MUCH more frequently than years past, which will include general improvements, new content and more.

A few weeks ago, we began ramping up the Vanguard development team with some familiar faces. Our criteria was simple; we wanted the most Vanguard-knowledgeable, passionate developers. While we plan to continue growing the team over the next few months, I wanted to briefly introduce a few of our team leads, including Salim "Silius" Grant (Creative Director), Todd "Hobart" Schmidt (Technical Director) and me, Andy Sites (Director of Development). Fortunately, I am the only noob to the world of Vanguard, although having been part of the original EverQuest, EverQuest II, Free Realms, and Clone Wars Adventures teams, I've spent most of my career working on MMOs.

Over the next several weeks, we plan to roll-out individual "spotlight" pieces for each team member, to give you an opportunity to get to know each of them. In addition, you can expect to see more frequent game updates, as well as more detailed information regarding the upcoming free-to-play aspects of Vanguard.

Talk to you soon and we'll see you online!

Andy Sites
Director of Development

I might actually give this a whirl when it goes free to play. I'm honestly not expecting much(I literally laughed out loud when they called it a AAA game), but maybe I'll be surprised.

I'll have you all know I was the first level 50 Disciple on my server. Whatever that was, I cant recall. Hilsbury possibly?

I still bring up Vanguard move while casting mechanics to this day when commenting on how other MMOs should do combat. One of the reasons GW2 has me excited.

Please explain. :p The combat mechanics are why I don't really play MMORPGs anymore, with the exception of City of Heroes every so often.

The class interactions worked well together. There was the opportunity to play things with meaningful CC, the animations ranged from adequate to nifty, and the pacing of combat was good. That's what I liked about them, Neksar.

Of course, by the time this goes Free to Play, Planetside 2 will be in beta, I'm sure. And that's a hefty bar to compete with, from everything I've seen.

I'm trying to remain excited about PS2, but the community's pissing me off to the point where I just want to know when the beta is and play it myself. The old guard is still at large, and just seems to want a graphical update for PS1. But I digress. Will certainly try out Vanguard if I can find a couple friends to pway wif.

Asheron's call, too.

Most MMOs somehow remain somewhat profitable for a very long time, even if not blockbuster successes.

The secondary "defensive" target was a major innovation, on par with seeing your target's target. (Not sure who did that first - my first experience with it was the "health of target's target" raid leader ability in EQ). Being able to keep a monster targeted while you cast heals and buffs on party members was fantastic. It gave healers something to do besides heal people, and made their play experience more exciting.
