What video game franchises need to be revived? I'm not talking remaking earlier games. I'm asking what needs sequels, or spin-offs, and hasn't been touched in a while. Also, how should they be handled? "Exactly the same as before" isn't a very interesting answer. How could the formula be updated, what could be improved, or what genre-shifts could be fun? Franchises with active titles in development are off limits, unless you propose a genre-shift.

I'll kick this off with Crimson Skies. It needs a sequel to the PC game that incorporates a bit more of the pulpy action of High Road to Revenge while retaining the flight model of the PC game Crimson Skies. I'm thinking boss battles with stall speeds.
In addition, I want a turn-based tactical game -- just straight-up convert the FASA tabletop rules to a video game interface with internet game matching, a fantastic UI (overlay color coded movement templates onto the hex map when you mouse-over a plane, with the color coding translating to pushing the envelope rolls and difficulties), and animated movement. Throw in an AI, random mission generator, and single player/co-op/adversarial campaign modes (along with tech tree unlocks and such, and different campaign stories for different regions, and randomized missions for adversarial campaigns based on region, and I'll happily bump the asking price to closer to that of a standard game, say $40), and sell it for $10 on XBL and Steam...

I want a Wing Commander spin-off, that covers a different carrier (and fighter wing) concurrent with I-III, IV, and V. You can have guest appearances by John Rhys Davies since Paladin went on a few extended secret missions away from the Tiger's Claw. I'd also love to see a strategy game based on Wing Commander fleet movements and such.

I want a StarCraft game in the vein of PlanetSide.

A PlanetSide RTS.

Give the BattleTech RTS another shot. Better yet, make it turn-based.

Diablo MMO.

I will die from not leaving my computer about 6 months after it's released and I have more achievement points in the game than are possible to obtain.

I want turn based DnD game. Hasn't been anything since ToEE.

I like Kaffis' vision for a new Crimson Skies.

Like in Taly's thread, I'll say Shining Force (RTS, not the hack-n-slash).

Keep the simple, intuitive, grid-style menu like in the Genesis-era SFs, but perhaps clean up the icons, or give the menu a more 3D flavor.

As semi-cliched as this may sound, perhaps take a light vs dark campaign approach, where you get different items/power-ups/spells for choosing a good or evil path.

3D animations are a given.

Make it epic! With good voice talent and a sweeping, engrossing story that could be a continuation of a previous installment, or something altogether new (although allusions to the original games would be a plus)

Man this would be tears of joy worthy . . .

LEGACY OF KAIN. That is all.

EDIT:

Also, Warcraft RTS series. I'm sick of WoW ruining all of these storylines that should be resolved in a single player game by actual heroes instead of random no name people.

I'll ditto this. This is also why I never, ever want to see a quest (or story-oriented mission) based MMO for StarCraft. A story-static MMOFPS? Sure. But nothing that would halt real progression of the story like WoW has, nor throw the real heroes of the story under the bus for random_noob.

We just moved to a new house and I found the disk while unpacking...was thinking of starting it up again after I beat Dragon Age.

Outrun. I want a sequel or update to Outrun 2019, one of the most unknown racing games in 16-bit history. The concept was damned cool, the execution was pretty good and the game was just fun.

FreeSpace. It's so virtually ready to be dumped into MMO format it's ridiculous it hasn't been already. Factional PvP built in with Terrans-Vasudans, and PvE vs. Shivans. Jump nodes to logically break the game up into "zones". A ton of different ship types - fighters, bombers, cruisers, transports, capital ships... I could seriously see myself killing ludicrous hours on tradeskills to build/maintain a guild capital ship.

Battlezone 2

RTS type game with customizable loadouts for the units you could deploy. Additionally, you could command your units from a topdown map, or you can just hop into the cockpit of the unit of your choice and command from the front lines all while leading said unit directly into enemy fire.

Add in the off map supports and the ability to hop out of your doomed unit, snipe the bad guy from the driver's seat of his, and commandeer the vehicle for your own, this was a great game for it's time and I'd love to see it brought back.
