http://www.nbcnews.com/technology/ingam ... -1C9255077 Quote: Microsoft is planning a 'special event' for next Xbox in May, reports say After several months of complete and utter silence from the current generation video game console market leader, new hints have begun to surface about what Microsoft's successor to the Xbox 360 will look like and when it will arrive. Speaking on the latest "What the Tech?!" technology podcast, veteran tech blogger and Microsoft watcher Paul Thurrot said that the company is planning to reveal its next-generation console, simply known as "Xbox," in a "special event" planned for May 21. While this is less than a month before the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), the gigantic game industry convention which tends to be used by the big three console developers— Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo — as a large stage with which to unveil their latest gaming gadgets, the timing actually fits in with Microsoft's longer tradition for the Xbox console. The Xbox 360 was first revealed in an MTV special program broadcast May 12, 2005, gracing the cover of Time Magazine alongside Bill Gates later that month. Although Thurrot did not identify a specific source for his information about the new console, his claims about the Xbox's availability were later corroborated by the tech website The Verge. Microsoft was not immediately available for comment on this story, but a representative for the company did tell NBC News last week that Microsoft would be "at E3 in a big way," with more information to come "closer to the end of the month." Thurrot said that the new console would be launching in "early November." This puts the next Xbox on a similar release schedule to Sony's PlayStation 4. In addition to the release timetable, Thurrot also gave some information about the upcoming console's pricing. He said that the new Xbox would be "expensive," running around $500 with a lower-priced alternative available for $300 and some form of subscription service. As for the console's much-discussed potential "always-online" requirement, Thurrot said that the Microsoft documents he has seen mentioned the feature. "Looking at some of the stuff I got a long time ago, it actually says 'must be internet-connected to use' in the notes," Thurrot said. "And that's all I have, but it does say that." Thurrot's also claimed that Microsoft has been working on two other Xbox devices — an entertainment-only device code-named "Yumo" that was ultimately scrapped, and a $99 version of the Xbox 360 code-named "Stingray." Given the company's continued effort to extend the 360's shelf life with progressively cheaper and smaller versions of the hardware, Thurrot argued that the new Xbox most likely won't be backwards-compatible with previous Microsoft console games. 5/21/13 11/2013 Launch date |

Eh. Likely pass. Probably just getting a PS4 this time around. I've stopped using my 360 long ago, and the Wii U is laughable. Also, for the lulz: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=534951 |

I tend to agree with him. • 240 million interner users in the US alone as of 2010. • 40 million Live! subscriptions world-wide, 60M in console sales as of 01/2012 What fraction of that 20M non-Live! members do you suppose don't have internet? I bet that the number of people lost over not having a connection will pale in comparison to the amount of people gained by whatever they're planning, which is obviously some sort of unified platform across mobile, tv and computer. It's all a numbers game, and MS wouldn't intentionally put themselves in the boat with lower numbers. They have a plan for growth and I'd be willing to bet that they'll be successful in that. |

I'll be pre-ordering i have no clue what all of the always-on hub bub is all about. It's not something I'm going to get too worked up about. My cable box is always on My PC's are always on (sometimes in sleep/hibernate mode, other times, not....) All of the various streaming appliances I've used throughout the years are always on (HTPC, Roku, Revue, Mvix, etc...) I really don't see what the big deal is I'm actually looking forward to my connected devices working more like appliances and less like computer operating systems |

I wonder if it will be backwards compatible or not. If not, I'll just wait til it gets cheap. If so, I may be an early adopter. |

My initial thought is, if BC is in fact 'no', then I would say that is a bad call. I have no idea what the logistics are behing making the system BC, and what the cost is, veresus the impact. For my own personal use, I rarely turn my xbox on to game any more. I have about 30 xbox games stacked on a shelf in my office, but I haven't played a disc based game in a long time. While I would like to have the ability to play them in the future without having to keep both systems connected, I dont think I would classify it as a deal breaker for me. I do however play some of the arcade games occasionally, and seriously hope that my 360 platform arcade games are playable on the new system. If they aren't then that is definitely a /fail. I desperately want someone to make a single device that will meet all of my TV viewing/gaming needs, and I think the XBox is on the right path in that regard. They still have a long way to go. |

The backwards compatibility issue is not a hardware-based one (well, technically it is, but it only requires code updating), so if regular 360 games aren't going to work, I don't see XBLA games working without updates or ports either. That said, it's a lot easier to patch a digital game than it is to fix a game that comes on a disc. |

As long as it has the option similar to Steam's offline mode (you can set it up ahead of time) or some leeway on the always on part, I might be interested... probably not though, I have a 360 but I rarely use the thing. My PC is my main gaming platform.... |

I'm with Midgen. I'm a cord cutter, so having devices "always connected to the internet" is old hat to me at this point. I think some people just don't like the idea of "Big Brother" or something like that. But the irony is that they are perfectly ok with Google saving every single query everyone has ever typed in (and the IP addresses/google accounts associated with them) since the history of the site (they seriously have them all saved, they have admitted this). And people tend to get more personal with Google than they do with their own family members and closest of close friends. Google: What to do for Erectile Dysfunction? Google: Am I gay for having a gay sex dream? |

Considering the minuscule amount of titles I bought for my Wii, and the even more anemic number of titles I would have been interested in for xbox 360 and PS3 that weren't also available for PCs, I'm very leery about dropping a few hundred dollars on any next generation console. |

I'm not sure when backwards compatibility became such a big deal? It **** sucked playing PS2 games on my original, fat PS3. Did people expect the SNES or Dreamcast to play their old Nintendo and Sega games? |

Rorinthas wrote: I would imagine the answer is "when consoles starting competing more with PCs" For me, I'd go with: when games and consoles both 1) had the capability to do backwards compatibility and 2) when price points for games and consoles got so high. |

Supporting backwards compatibility raises cost for both developer and manufacturer, so your motivations are at odds with one another. |

If you don't have broadband internet, you aren't the target demo for a next gen console; you are for AOL though and a disc is en route. |

Lenas wrote: Supporting backwards compatibility raises cost for both developer and manufacturer, so your motivations are at odds with one another. By how much would cost be raised? My computer can, with a small amount of software effort, play games from like 1992. What's the problem? (serious questions.) |

Consoles vs PC's have basically been mirrors to how we now see iOS vs PC's. Closed systems with specific code needs based on hardware architecture. Certain processors are not capable of handling certain code, certain GPU's are heavily tailored to run processes a certain way. Right now, both MS and Sony are converting their next systems to an x86 architecture, which will bring them in line with current PC coding. How "easy" it is to port old code should be apparent to you immediately: how many emulators have you found past the SNES generation that can perfectly run any game on their system? Almost none, because it's really hard to contort the hardware we have today to work like the hardware of yesteryear. Now that the architecture is going to be identical on all 3, ports to any system are going to be easier than ever and development costs are going to be lower than ever. |
