Project Natal

Quote:
The Project Natal sensor[1] is an approximately 9-inch (23 cm) wide horizontal bar[18] connected to a small circular base with a ball joint pivot, and is designed to be positioned lengthwise above or below the video display. The device features an "RGB camera, depth sensor, multi-array microphone, and custom processor running proprietary software",[1] which provides full-body 3D motion capture, facial recognition, and voice recognition capabilities. The Project Natal sensor's microphone array enables the Xbox 360 to conduct acoustic source localization and ambient noise suppression, allowing for things such as headset-free party chat over Xbox Live.[1]

Quote:
As of September 2009[update], publishers actively working on games for Project Natal account for over 70 percent of third-party software sales for the current generation of video game consoles.[37] Games indicated to include Project Natal functionality include EA Sports Grand Slam Tennis[38] and Fable III.[39]

This could make the computer systems present in the movie Gamer a reality (not the controlling human part, but the moving your hands and have the screen around the room part).

My geek senses are tingling and I need one of these when they come out! Air guitar FTW~!

Meh, it's a huge gimmick. These sort of things mean nothing unless some sort of force feedback is provided. But, I also hate flailing about as a control mechanism.

There's nothing stopping you from getting a real stering wheel however what i'm really excited about is fable or other RPGs (zelda types). Where you get to swing a sword, or duck or block... and have actual sword fights with the tv (more so than simply swinging the wii remote).

Check out the creative genius who are already on board... I'm excited just thinking about it...

Actually, that's what I'm talking about. Keep in mind I was rather hopefull something good would be done w/ the new Wii controls. I'd rather just press a button than wing a sword. The extra effort of having to flail my limbs isn't going to be all I want without a force feedback for the action. I shook the wiimote for Zelda, but honestly, it's not that interesting a control mechanisim yet. I understand where you're coming from, but for me, there is more technology and technique required before these new types of controls become interesting. I know what you're imagining, but I do not share your optimisim. Not to be a curmudgeon or anything... :D

Coren showed me the ps3 motion controllers this morning... I had to change my pants. It's a shame they do not have the zelda titles... If they did, I will drop my hatred for them and fanboi for sony this once.

And Natal isn't? Oh wait, I forgot who I was quoting

I'm not completely sold on either, at this point. They both look terribly gimicky, and I have never been a Wii fan. We'll see how it goes I guess.

There are things about both in which I have some excitement and/or skepticism. The PS3 motion controller looks like it'd have a lot more potential for use in action type games, etc.

Nope, this looks just as gimicky. Motion controls like this might lead to something good down the line, but right now, they aren't very good. Just like the Wii. It all gets a huge yawn from me.

Wii has it's good and it's bad. Being the first to come out with motion controlling, it was awsome to be actually interacting with the little miis. Also it was responsible for about a month of aching muscles and dinner table debate (over who's the better tennis player).

What it lacked however was depth beyong mind numbing multiplayer games which is something I forsee being fixed in the ps3 version.

Xbox is trying to tackle the casual market and I do see them succeeding to some extent. However ps3 has never and I doubt ever will go that route.

I use to have doubts over motion control, however the Wii has put that out of my mind and for certain games, has actually succeded to give me the type of emersion not achieved since early nintendo Mud games. This is also why I'm excited about the possibilities.

What's weird, is how long Sony's been working on the motion thing...their design that they showed E3 has been in the works before the Wii was announced even.

So it's a little worrisome that it's been in development *this* long considering where it's at now hehe.

I've been kinda going back and forth from disinterest to cautiously optimistic (seeing Resident Evil 5 working with it, and coming out in the spring kinda got me back to optimistic).

Just keep in mind if you actually DO decide to go window shopping for an Xbox 360, you may find some really good deals out there that seem too good to be true. That's because they are. Tons and tons of banned 360s showing up for sale on the cheap.

If you never decide to use xbox live, however, you can get an xbox for a great, great price.

Ohh.. thanks for that Numbuk. Was wondering why they were so cheap! looks like if I do decide to do this, I'll be going the new console route. It's still cheaper than the ps3 though, so should be ok.

I think they draw may depend partly on what games you play too. Having seen a demo of natal, I don't see how i'm going to play Assassin's Creed 2 or Left for Dead with the fancy motion control thing in any satisfying way. It's a tool that developer's have to design games for rather than a control that is designed to control games that are beng released now. So, unless they design a control system to control current games w/ motion controls, they are going to have a hard time getting wide acceptance by the market in general.

Also, the name bugs me. Natal? Like, right now we're pre-natal. Then after the release we'll be post-natal.

If you're not in a hurry to get an xbox right this moment, you can wait and buy an xbox that'll be bundled with the Natal. Which is almost certain to happen.

May be better then buying an xbox now and then paying again for the Natal add-on.

I would proably wait and see what it's like after release as well, you don't really know the amount of support it will recieve from developers. It's kind of an expensive purchase if it isn't a big splash.

I'm curious to see it in action. It has potential. Microsoft is known for understanding where the wind is going to blow, and leaning towards it. One of the smartest things they did for Natal is hire this guy specifically for that project after seeing his youtube video.
