Okay, I just don't see this.

Its bad enough I have to talk to people on a phone. I don't want to be walking around talking to the smart phone itself. Sure, while driving, yeah. But not for standard use.

Voice recognition on your phone is cool. When it works. I don't care about natural language or having a conversation with my phone, but I'd like it to understand wtf I said.

I could see this if the phone became sentient, but that won't happen for a while. Also you can't kill Google, but you can compete with it.

Taly, from what I remember you don't like phones pretty much in general, isn't that the case?

Voice recognition is cool, but the really cool thing is the AI interface. It's still beta software, but it's a start of conversational AI in consumer electronics and I hope it's well enough received so that others race to present products that push the envelope.

Seriously? No way. I don't want my phone to have a personality, and I sure as **** don't want to talk to it. I *hate* voice recognition. Especially on IVR systems. Its slow, and annoying.

The point of Siri is that it is not slow or annoying.

I think the whole point is that Siri isn't annoying to talk to.

I have zero interest in talking to my phone in 90% of my usage scenarios.

When I'm driving, using voice search to change the GPS destination is convenient. Any other time... no thanks. I don't care how sentient it is, I don't want to be carrying on voice conversations with my smartphone..

So, you want to enter an appointment - would it be better by

A) talking to your phone, telling it you want a reminder of an appointment for such-and-such and saying the date and time

or

B) getting the phone out of your pocket, opening the calendar app, switching to the correct month, clicking on the correct day, hitting the add, entering a title, time and a reminder on a screen or tiny keyboard

I'll take talking to my phone over all the fumbling I do entering an appointment any time.

Yeah, I don't know why you guys seem so set against talking to your phone. It's way faster than pushing all of the buttons/shortcuts and messing with an interface. The only roadblock is your self image about talking to your phone.

Advances in tech are probably 95% of the time about convenience, and we're getting to the point of saying, "No... that's too convenient."

Siri even self-activates when you hold the phone up to your ear, so you don't even have to look like a weirdo talking to your phone. It just looks like a short phone call.

Adding an appointment to my phones calendar is something I almost never do. I might have done it twice in the entire time ive owned smartphones. I can live with navigating a couple of screens on the rare chance i need it.

That's a very limited view of what can be done with Siri [or advanced voice tech in the future], though.

I don't see how this "Kills google"

The Googleplex has access to resources that Apple wishes it could access.

Yeah, no joke. I'm a big guy with huge hands, and big *** sausage fingers. I hate my keypad, which often times seems to be made for use by midgets, gnomes, and small children.

Geeks everywhere rejoiced that the Star Trek communicator became a reality with the cell phone.

Geeks everywhere rejoiced that the Star Trek datapad became a reality with the iPad and it's counterparts.

But now geeks everywhere scoff at the Star Trek idea of talking to a computer and having it do stuff for you?

I'm not sure I understand.

If I was a crew member on starship, in a sci fi television show, i would probably adamantly insist on using voice commands to control everything...

I practical every day use, amongst you commoners.. I don't want to be standing around talking to my phone in public. (heck, I don't even like to stand around talking ON my phone in public). It should be legal to slap someone talking on (or to) a phone in line at the grocery store, etc...

If I could talk to my computer or phone casually and have it do stuff, it would be pretty sweet. But Google has strong voice products as well and I don't see why Apple has a monopoly here. 'Killer' implies something like racing a car against someone's horse, but in this case it's more like car vs car, both of which are continually upgraded.

Maybe you've got a speaking disorder. Or you type like 150 WPM.

Hmm, typing on a tiny *** virtual keyboard on my phone, or having to repeat everything I say 3-4 times because of "questionable" voice recognition. Tough call.
