So I'd been meaning to ask this here for a while, and the CD rips thread got me thinking about it.

I'm interested in making digital copies of a number of my DVDs, mainly things for which there is no readily available digital copy (my MASH collection, for instance).

Ideally, I'd like to be able to put these on my iPad for trips, etc. so an iTunes friendly solution would be best.

There's so much out there on semi-legitimate and non-legitimate ways to do this, I though you all might have some good practical advice.

Not sure how it rates as an actual ripper, but I use AnyDVD from Slysoft on the system that I play DVD's on.

It does have ripping functionality, but it's primary feature is 'disabling unwanted features'. The "HD" version works with blu-ray and HD DVD (remember those?), and can remove HDCP checks, etc...

It's ripping functionality doesn't do any transcoding (if that is the correct term). I believe it just makes digital copies of the DVD files minus the 'extras'. They have a suite of other variably useful apps too.

I haven't done any ripping (transcoding?) lately, but I believe last time I asked this question here, I was referred to handbrake, which if I recall is Apple friendly.

I haven't done this in a while, but I always found handbrake to be pretty user friendly (and supports most types of devices you'd be encoding to)

The catch is that it's a transcoder, not a ripper, so you have to pull the DVD files off the disc before encoding them. I generally used dvd decrypter for that, http://www.dvddecrypter.org.uk/ although development on it was halted long ago, so there may be better software out there for it. However, I don't remember ever having a failure, it's pretty straightforward.

Edit: Just read Midgen's post, I wouldn't be surprised if I was the one that pointed him to handbrake back in the day too. Hooray consistency! :)

I think several people suggested it.. I know for sure Mr. Sky was on that bandwagon (at least at that time).

Thanks guys.

The other benefit of handbrake is its Mac/Win, so I can use it on all my machines.

I think it's really silly that it's so hard to get a digital copy of a DVD you already own.

I wonder how long it will take for "personal use" copies to make it out of the grey area they're currently in...

Aye, Handbrake rocks. I was surprised to learn that it's not a ripper on Windows machines...it does rip (tearing through copy protection and all) on Mac boxes. One-stop shop.

However...

I can't get it to play nicely with the Blu-ray drive I just bought for my iMac. It doesn't want to rip those (though if I use MakeMKV to rip first, then it converts with no problem).

Actually, from what I read, it doesn't work as a standalone ripper on macs, either. You have to download VLC, and it uses the VLC codecs to rip and then transcode the DVD.

At least that's what the site says now. Not sure if they've changed it recently.

AnyDVD is excellent in Windows for removing copy protection and other unfriendly things. it works as a shim between your hardware and windows, and makes the disc available to the OS and applicaitons minus any of the nasty stuff you don't want (forced warning messages, delays, copy protection, etc...). It also has the ability to rip the DVD files to your hard drive in native format. You could use handbrake on the results from there...

I have no idea if there are Apple friendly versions, or if it would work in an emulator like parallels

Either way, VLC is well worth having around just on general principle.

Late as always on the bandwagon, but I've been ripping my collection and DVDFab has been wonderful in putting things any whatever format I want.
