Instead of having the cost of phones subsidized over the source of a two-year contract, T-Mobile is shifting to an unsubsidized "Value Plan" system. Under these plans, you can either pay full price for the device up front, pay for it in installments that are explicitly spelled out on your bill, or bring in your own unlocked device.

Seems like an 'It's about time' thing to me, but I haven't been on a consumer mobile phone plan since I retired in 2001.

Phone subsidies are something that probably never should have existed. This is a Good Thing™

I've been with T-Mobile for the... 3 or 4 years I have, now, because they offered the OPTION to forgo the subsidy at a savings on the service plan. So I was already doing this, essentially. Good on them for taking the hidden costs out into the open and putting the spotlight on how great this (former) option is for the customer. This is exactly why competition in the marketplace is good, and why I'm glad they didn't get swallowed up by AT&T.
