So I'm still one of the smartphone-less luddites. Don't want to pay extra for one, don't see the need. I'm honestly more likely to upgrade to an LTE iPad mini than a smartphone.

That said, I've happily used an iPod Touch as a wi-fi smartphone/planner for years. But it hasn't been updated in 3 years, and is starting to be a bit behind the times.

Anyone have a suggestion of a similar palm-pilot-esque, small, wi-fi device I can use for accessing files on dropbox, email, calendars, alarms, etc?

I've been mostly using my iPad mini since my last iPod bit the dust in an unfortunate lab accident, but would prefer something that's actually pocketable.

If it comes down to it, I can always get a used iPhone/Smartphone and not use a sim card, but I'm wondering if there's a better option out there that I've missed.

They still make iPod Touches.

Could probably pick up one a generation behind for even cheaper, if you want.

Like I said, it hasn't been updated in 3 years and is starting to run a bit behind the times. I was quite happy with mine when I got it, but it was starting to show it's age when it broke. Not sure paying $200 for a now 4-year old chipset is a good idea.

As of now, the most current iOS that runs adequately on it is 6. It partially supports 7 and 8 but 9 will not supported. TBH, I didn't even find 7 ran OK on mine. The under clocked A5 was pretty hard hit compared the the processors it's designed for, especially with the lower RAM.

The lack of good support for the newer OS's limits the utility quite a bit, from my experience.

I could get another refurbished replacement, and I might, but I'm interested in alternatives first.

As to getting a 4th generation, I still have one, and it barely runs mobile safari for general browsing without crashing- it's about as useful or a bit less useful than my 1st generation iPad.

Ah, I gotcha. I confess I haven't paid attention to the iPod line since the iPhone came out. I didn't realize they hadn't done a refresh recently.

Edit: although, it looks like they're about to get a refresh with a 6th generation this autumn.

So you don't have a cell phone? What madness is that?

He's got a cell phone, just not a smartphone.

One would thing a smartphone would replace two devices and take care of all the things to do without having to struggle with a wifi only device.

It's also about $50 more per month, and a heck of a lot more expensive of a base device. For the cost, I'd get a 128gb iPad Mini 3 with LTE, much more useful imo. Never really seen the draw of smartphones.

I've been doing fine with my Nokia candy bar phone for about 7 years now, and have a dirty cheap talk plan on it. I get reception anywhere, and have about a 2 week battery life.

The 6th generation "update" this fall was also supposed to be an update this spring, and last fall, and then last spring..... Basically, people assume constantly it will be updated with the next main event. I'm just seeing if there's anything better out there.
