I used to mod XBox's back in the pre-HD days and loved XBMC. I lost track of it over the years, but recently, troubleshooting a problem with my Fire Stick, I stumbled on Kodi (XBMC) on youtube.

I might try burning it to a firestick and see what they are up to these days.

Oh yeah, I use it for all my local media on my HTPC. It's AWESOME. I spent way too much time making digital copies of my DVD collection, so it has been invaluable in organizing and playing all that stuff.

What platform are you running it on? What size display? And what are you using for a remote?

I'm running it on Windows, 55" TV for the display, and I use my Xbox 360 controller as a remote.

I've also used a Logitech mini controller and it worked just fine as well.

So you have some kind of IR receiver on your PC?

Nope, I have the Microsoft Xbox wireless receiver for my xbox controllers, and the Logitech mini comes with a USB plug receiver that works for the controller.

I'd thought about getting a cheap IR remote and programming my harmony to send the commands, but I have yet to do it, as so far it's been "good enough".

EDIT:

I just looked through their site, and it looks like they've added something that's an even better option:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.xbmc.kore

https://itunes.apple.com/en/app/official-xbmc-remote/id520480364

Set your media pc to boot straight up to KODI, then use your smartphone as your remote. Done and done!

I've actually been looking for an easier way to control Netflix/Hulu/Amazon Video/Spotify while running my HTPC. Looks like this may be a better all around solution (at the very least, start the program you want then switch to the Kodi remote to use kodi specifically).

Hmm,

I was going to try running on a Fire Stick as a trial, but I'm skeptical that the minimal remote features will be adequate. I'd prefer to keep it on that type of platform (rather than a PC).

The only PC I currently use to display content on my TV any more is my Surface Pro 3, which I do wirelessly (and rarely). I'd rather not use that for Kodi.

I have a mini-desktop available that I might play with too....

Thanks for the tips...

Let me know how it works on the fire stick streaming media off your main box, I have a fire stick sitting too that I might investigate. I would think that the mini-remote should do most things, tagging/naming media will be a nightmare but selecting/playing/ff-rw/pausing should be just fine.

Looks like the "android universal remote" is free but requires pay for each remote plugin. I'll have to investigate the pricing on that, still looks like a pretty excellent app, and it does have plugins for Kodi, as well as most main media services.

well, the video that i stumbled on that (re-)introducted me to XBMC/Kodi was a tutorial for setting up Kodi on a FireStick.

this is the video I stumbled on.

Edit: I won't have any time to commit to this for a week or three, but once I do, I'll let you know how it goes.
