Dear world,

I want to get a 3D TV.....but, I also don't want to have to buy another TV in 5 years when some other tech comes out.

I just watched the Killzone 3 trailer. 3D and PlayStation Move...holy crap awesome. All of these 3D games coming out look amazing and to me it's the next step in gaming....somewhere between the time Mortal Kombat 4, Mario 64, and GTA3 came out, games got very stale. Games used to be awesome and fun....but then they just got overly complex and lacked focus. Wii tried to simplify things and bring back the simple fun...but it is a little tooooo simple. To me, 3D combined with PlayStation move is the future of gaming in the living room.

Anyways...I don't really have any money now...but I'm wondering if I should buy a nice big 3D 1080p HDTV within the next year, or wait until possibly a year or two into the lifespan of the consoles after this generation.. (e.g. PS4, XBox 720, Wii 2, etc)

How fast do you think the tech will change again? I'm pissed off that I bought an HDTV (I originally bought it just to play HD games and watch Blu Ray with PS3) and now I'm needing a 3D TV to play all this new cool ****.

What do you all think about this? Is it worth waiting, or are we all gonna have to invest in a totally new tech 5 years after these 3D TV's permeate the market?

If you get a 3D tv, the least hassle will come with a 120+hz LCD or led. DLP use a checkerboard signal and it's giving me some trouble because Sony is lazy.

I'm passing on the active glasses tech. I can't possibly imagine that we won't either see a passive (polarized) glasses tech short on its heels, or, what with the 3-D craze, advancements in autostereoscopy that will be suitable for living room use.

Yeah, I guess it's best to wait....in a few years nobody will want to use a set that requires those glasses.

I can still enjoy the games with PlayStation Move and without 3D...

tell the new technology to eat your junk and flip them off. Enjoy your HDTV for the time being, and be the last to adopt 3D TV before the next big thing.

3D is enjoyable enough (in moderation, and used judiciously), but I don't understand the ZOMGMUSTHAVE rush that so many companies seem to be adopting. I prefer a good-looking, well-composed 2D image far more. Call me a Luddite if you will, but I have little desire to see 3D infect our home theater systems.

I see value in 3D if and only if it's handled in a manner most transparent to the audience. Even the 3D in theaters isn't quite ready for prime-time, in my opinion. Only once we eliminate the need for glasses and expand the color and brightness ranges to the quality we currently enjoy on HDTVs do I expect to see standards evolve and widespread adoption occur.

There are competing standards for 3D, so don't buy 'till a clear winner is declared. Remember HD DVD?

I honestly have to say that I didn't think 3d gaming would be that awesome until I got it working on my 60" tv. Games like L4D are amazing while others like WoW have new life breathed into them.

Yeah, I'm aware of it...and it does make sense. Kinda almost like how kids develop myopia if you use night lights.

I think as long as kids still go outside and play and do other things than stare at their simulated 3D screen they will be just fine

Buying tech early is never cheap. You will spend a lot of money at the risk of early obsolescence.

Only you can decide if it's worth the risk/loss to have the tech early...

Yeah, that's true. I guess I better just wait it out a bit, since I'm not rich.

I thought I waited it out enough when I made the move to High Def.....3D kinda came out of nowhere, really wasn't expecting it...and it's really cool. Especially for games. Just look at that Killzone 3 with 3D and PlayStation move...it's mouth-watering.

They really need to just standardize. I'm sure at least 90% of people can't afford to buy a new TV every 5 years just to keep up. Remember the good ole days where the only thing that you could really improve was the size of the TV? And even then, no matter what the size of TV, it still was compatible. Ugh. I love all the tech advancements, but it's impossible to keep up with. I'd like to be able to start my own library of media that will have some kind of longevity. I don't wanna constantly have to replace my TV and all my movies and games every time they think of something new. It just sucks. Will it eventually standardize? I think maybe I'll just kill myself, that will ease the frustration. Lol. I don't even play games or watch movies that much anymore, I don't have time....this is turning into a worrisome and expensive hobby, it used to be fun.

I feel the same way, I just bought a new TV last year, and now they want me to buy another one! I'm sure they're pissing off a lot of consumers with their current trend of non-backwards compatible gear.

I have no interest in a TV that requires glasses to watch. I got PRK surgery so I wouldn't have to do that any more

Hmmm, never heard of that. I don't think it's factual.
