The Glade 4.0

So I'm on Verizon and I'm looking to get a new phone and chuck my PDA. You guys have any opinions on the advantages of either? I'm leaning more toward the Motorola Droid at the moment, but it looks like the HTC Windows Mobile phones would more easily integrate with my work stuff. I've looked over reviews on YouTube and am having a tough time making a decision.

By the way, I purposely did not mention the iPhone so please don't even mention it.

Nexus1 is meant to be nicer than droid. Just sayin.

My preference is Windows mobile, Android is to limited in what you can do to do it as google locks things down just like apple, microsoft doesn't and encourges modding so you can do so much to it, like don't like the user interface? install a new one, I love my windows mobile phone.

Seriously, of the choices, I can't fathom picking Windows Mobile over Android.

Im about to retire my Android for the new HD2 when it comes out.

Android is pretty fun, especially the market place. But for me I require productivity, and the lack of a good exchange client in android is driving me away.

My phone needs to be primarily, a good phone, and a reliable email/contacts/calendar interface to my corporate exchange server. Anything else is gravy.

That said, there are some really cool apps on the Android Market, mostly free.

Have you actually used a WinMo phone lately? Something like a Touch Pro 2 ? Just curious which version of WinMo you are basing your opinion on, or if it's just Anti Windows/Microsoft angst?

Eh, I don't hate Microsoft or Windows, I just don't like them nearly as much as my Apple products.

As for the phone, 'twas an HTC Touch I had about...eight months ago, I guess? I hated that phone with a passion. To the point that I literally on several occasions had to stop myself from breaking it in half or hurling across the room. Unusably slow, unresponsive, and buggy to the point of being an utter failure, as well as being a poorly-designed piece of hardware.

I went on to buy a used Blackberry 7130e on eBay for $40 to replace it, because I just couldn't deal with it anymore.

Because the phone I love is not in the list... I have to go with Android.

Were it an option I would suggest Blackberry. I love my 8330.

That's one thing that does annoy me, most people just say it sucks without really even knowing, the only real downfall of windows mobile IMO is it's default UI sucks, of course that's completely moot since windows supports custom UI's and no windows mobile phones even come default anymore, and some are amazingly good like HTC's sense flow interface.

I cannot speak for FarSky; but I am a fan of Microsoft, I liked ME, I liked XP, I liked Vista and I like Windows 7. But I recently had a Motorolla 9Qc that ran Windows Mobile 5; I hated how slow and laggy the device was when I was not placing a call. Not even accessing the internet. I upgraded it to Windows Mobile 6.1 and still had no love from the device.

As a result I upgraded to my curve, and have not had any problems since.

I've liked HTC's products in the past, though you want to get a chance to test drive them; the current HTC product may or may not always line up well, power-wise, with the latest Windows Mobile release. A symptom of the diversity of hardware WinMo is compatible with, to the point that they can't/don't really seem to collaborate with the manufacturers quite so much as Google is able to (so far) or Apple does (since they ARE the manufacturer) in keeping their OS and hardware smoothly progressing at the same rate.

For me, a smartphone is all about being a phone and exchange client. As Midgen said, really look hard into how compatible it's going to be, if your workplace is an Exchange shop. Because if your productivity usage on your PDA is at all like mine, Exchange is your workhorse, and you may not really realize it until you don't have ready, integrated access.

It comes down to how Exchange is set up. I have a Droid, and my company Exchange server is set up for web proxy. It took 5 seconds to connect, and I haven't had a single problem with it. Android is still a work in progress, but I have been pleased with not only the native apps, but many of the app store products.

Cnet rated the Nexus one higher than the Iphone. Both are touch screen without a slider keyboard. Check out the Cnet review Nexus One versus Iphone. Also my wife had a HTC phone with Windows mobile and the batter life was AWFUL she could go a full day without having to charge it.

I got a Droid on Tuesday. I'm really loving it so far. I still have to get used to the behaviors of a smart phone though. Its nice having Google sync everything up for me though.

Edit: A lot of the bad things I've heard seem to be based on older versions of the OS or times when a particular app didn't exist.

Personally I love Windows Mobile but hate HTC. As pointed out the battery life on the HTC is bad as was my reception. I ended up switching to a Curve because of cost considerations and hate the Blackberry set up.

I haven't played with the Droid much but from what I've heard a lot of the apps are bugged to poot because of multiple versioning, network differences and hardware differences. It is not like the iPhone with a single manufacturer, a single network and a clean OS.

That actually has nothing to do with Windows mobile, it has to do with being a smartphone, be it Windows mobile, iPhone, Andruid or Blackberry, they all suffer from battery like issues due to more frequent use and higher power requirements due to higher end faster hardware. Also manufacturers hardware choice comes into play as well with what size battery they go with, with my HTC Fuze (Touch Pro) i've only had an issue with battery life once and it was due to a specific app I had installed that just kept running in the background constantly, otherwise after a full day away from an outlet it's usually around 50% battery life.

I can use pretty much any phone I want. I've used Android based phones, and love some things about them, but I always end up back on WinMo, primarily for the reasons I mentioned previously.

My current phone is a HTC Touch Pro 2. No, battery life isn't great, but it's no worse than the Android phones I've used. Like Sas says, it kinda goes with the Smartphone genre.

I'm contemplating the HTC HD2 when it comes out because of the snapdragon processor, but lament the idea of no physical qwerty keyboard. I really liked the keyboard on my G1, and LOVE the keyboard/tilt screen on my TP2.

I'm waiting for the HD2 as well, and on a plus side i'll be off of AT&T too then cause i'm so sick of the horrible 3G speeds ever since the 3G iPhone came out, though I am hoping that between now and then HTC introduce a new slider touchscreen phone with the snapdragon, though I have a feeling even if they do make one it's will i'm sure have a smaller 3.6-3.8" screen not a 4.3" like the HD2, and I really like the idea of a 4.3" screen on my phone.

I'll be getting a droid when I get my tax money >:)

Disclaimer; I have not done this myself so I cannot attest to the functionality. The Andriod builds are ported from other platforms, and there are likely bugs and such, especially where hardware support is involved (sensing the stylus being pulled out, keyboard, etc...). Also, for data to work, depending on your provider, you may have to switch data plans. I know with T-Mobile, the Andriod data plan is separate. You can change easily enough via their online tools, and I believe they plans cost the same, but it might be more hassle than it's worth.

I may give this a shot just for giggles. If I do I'll report back my experiences.

Here is another more recent video. According to the comments the Android port is still very much a WIP. Bluetooth, WiFi, Sound, etc... still not working. But as you can see, much of the other functionality is. Might be fun to play with if you have one of these devices and want to see what Android is all about.

I'd have to say my only real complaint about the Droid is having no Bluetooth voice dialing. I haven't had an accident yet because of it, but it is a pain in the butt having to manually dial before the Bluetooth headset takes over.
