No, your device doesn't upload anything. It sends a link and the Chromecast streams whatever it is directly from the cloud in whatever resolution your TV is. Your device does ZERO heavy lifting. All it does is tell the dongle where to find the content.

So you can't view content that is on your laptop, tablet or phone on the TV? You can only view content that exists online?

Like has been said, this isn't a streaming device.

So this does exactly what my Xbox does today but requires that I bring another electronics device to the party?

Yeah if it isn't accessible via a streaming website, you can't watch it with chromecast. People are creative, so I wouldn't be surprised if someone didn't make an app that turned your device into a media streamer for chromecast to pull.

Sure, except for Xbox to do something like this you have to get behind their pay wall (XBLG). Also, it's a lot easier to move (or travel with) a USB stick than an Xbox. As far as future content goes, someone updating their app or content to support this simple feature doesn't need to rely on Microsoft's awful certification process, they just have to update their website.

True if I want to watch the internets on someone elses TV a 2 inch dongle would be easierto bring with. Would it sync to their WiFi and other electronic controller device automatically?

You sync it to their wifi and control it with your phone, their phone, their laptop, whatever has an internet connection. There is no syncing with a controller, the Chromecast connects to your network and any device can send to it through a supported app or browser.

This is an internet based device. Why can't they find an advertisement promising to make their pathetic 2 inch dongle bigger?

Google tried to give the impression at its press event that the Chromecast was some kind of magical attachment that required no setup, but there are a few steps that need to be taken before you're up and running. First thing's first -- you'll need to plug the Chromecast dongle into an available HDMI port on your TV and also connect it to USB for power. The two annoying parts about this are that a TV's "service" USB port won't work for power, and the power plug is on the end directly opposite the HDMI plug. Meaning that unless you have a TV from the last couple of years you'll be connecting another wall plug for power and if your TV is mounted a wall it may be a bit tight against the wall with everything connected.

That aside, you can configure your Chromecast either by visiting google.com/chromecast/setup on a computer or by downloading the Chromecast app from Google Play. In either case, the simple apps makes a direct Wifi connection to your Chromecast and let you sign in to your local Wifi network using your phone, tablet or computer, a process that takes only a few minutes. You then assign a name to your Chromecast -- "Living Room" or "Bedroom", for example -- and you're all set.

Jesus, Taly, it's not the size of the dongle, it's what you do with it.

Very cool. I can think of literally thousands, hundreds, dozens, some uses for this.

Dongle is a very unfortunate word. How can you read it and not think "dangling dong?"

I got 2 Apple TVs for free, and have come to really enjoy them. After reading about these, it seems these would be pretty good, too - Apple TVs don't come with a browser.

I'm not sure I'd pay for them though, but I wouldn't have paid for the Apple TVs until I got these. Now, I'd replace both of them if they crapped out. I've loaded all my DVDs and blu rays on a drive and home share it. Turns out I have a couple of hundred, and before having them shared I hardly ever watched them. Now, I re-watch a couple every week.

AppleTV is only the second Apple product I've ever been tempted to buy. (The other was a very old ipod I actually did buy). It looks awesome.

My lack of trust for Apple's business practices combined with the fact that they are primarily a content provider these days has prevented me from pulling the trigger on that. So far they haven't screwed anyone over with DRM like Sony does... but will that continue?

Correct me if I am wrong but Tas wouldn't be able to stream content from his home drive to the Google Dong without uploading it all to the interwebz first.

It's amazing how many people don't think you're talking about a piece of electronics when you use the word properly.

As I understand it, Chromecast uses the DIAL protocol to stream from what is basically a Google TV server. There's free software to do the streaming already.

That and some perl cgi hacking (or something probably already out there now) and you can stream all your movies from your PC to your TV via the Chromecast.

Google today announced a new Internet-to-television device, a well-developed area of technology that doesn't really need another gizmo. Yet, Chromecast, as it's called, has the techies all giddy. A few of them said they already went on over to the Play store and bought one — before Google had even finished up its little event. The general upshot of the stick is that it ports the television on your computer — like Netflix — to your television. A lot of things already do this, like Roku, Apple TV, and Google's own Google TV. So what makes this thing any different or better than all the others?

It's dirt cheap. The stick only costs $35. Roku's similar dongle-type streamer retails for $100. There's a huge mental difference between $100 and $35. It's easy to splurge on something that costs less than an Urban Outfitters shirt. In addition, Netflix users — old and new — get three months of the streaming service free, essentially paying for most of the stick. (Three months of streaming costs, at minimum $24.)

• It's teeny tiny. Most of these magic TV things come in box form. This is just a stick that goes into an HDMI port. That means no cords. Update: Tricky tricky. Google doesn't mention a cord anywhere, but the actual device comes with one. Womp. There's also zero set-up. It just plugs in, you tap a button in compatible apps or the Chrome browser, and like magic it pushes that stuff to your TV. works.

• It Has More Content Than Meets the Eye. The official Google partnerships don't amount to more than, say, Roku has on its box. The stick officially works with YouTube, Netflix, and Google Play Movies and TV. But there's a secret trick for getting all other web streaming services — like HBO GO (!) — from laptop to computer: Chrome tab projection. Per the demo, any tab open on the Chrome browser will play on the television. So, the HBO GO app might not work, but the desktop version will. Sure a computer connected by HDMI can do that, too. But this is a lot easier, smaller, and does a lot more.

• It Works with a Lot of Phones. This works on both Android and iOS, meaning you can swap out phones or tablets or computers with different subscription services, or movies downloaded. It opens up a lot more content.

• It Turns (Almost) Every TV into a Smart TV. Any television with an HDMI port — so probably not that old clunker you bought on Craigslist — turns into a "smart" TV, with your phone or tablet or laptop as the remote control, allowing you to play videos, control volume, or even turn on the TV.

The whole thing makes watching TV from your phone or computer seamless and at $35 people who watch a lot of streaming TV from Netflix have almost no not reason to buy it. Without the Chrome tab projection thing the whole offering gets a little less enticing. But at least for now it looks like a more elegant way to connect up HDMI to multiple devices by just plugging in.

Wow, the same author too? Dang.

Any critiques aside, it's worth $35 to me just because I can send shady, online sports streams to my TV without having to move my laptop and plug it in.

The device definitely sounds like it's priced appropriately. For $35 it does not need to revolutionize the way you enjoy watching television and movies.
