Appbrain is another app I've discovered recently. It's an app management utility that lets you catalog and manage your installed apps. If you like you can use your PC web browser to browse the market and install apps over USB (and presumably Bluetooth).

Coincidentally, Angry Birds Lite Beta is available for download via their interface (it's still not showing up on the normal marketplace for some).

I just picked up an android phone and tried ringdroid, but when it saves a cropped MP3 it distorts it badly. Is there a better make a ring tone app now?

I installed Rings Extended, which allows you to choose any sound file for your ringtone/notification. That way you can make your ringtone on your PC, then copy it to the SD card and point to it.

Editing any mp3 will always add more lossiness to it. You're taking a compressed file, uncompressing it, editing it, and recompressing it. Not really a way around that. Most you can hope for is that it's imperceptible to you.

That last part is causing me trouble. I have a file on email on the phone. It will allow me to preview the file. I can't work out how to download it to phone files from email. I can move it using PC connection though.

If you hold down on the link, it might let you save as.

You can set ringtones from within the default music player that comes with Android (though maybe only on a Droid).

LauncherPro Plus: It's a home screen replacement which is pretty awesome, I've been using it for a couple months now, supports accelerometer screen rotation on home screen, can adjust the number of home pages, it adds 5 spots at the bottom of the screen that are visable on all home screens so you can your link to your texts, emails, etc on all screen and it's even separately scrollable to have up to 3 screen of 5 icons, customizable transition effects when flicking thru home screens.

Adfree: Root required but if your phone is rooted this is a must, it removes in app ads from any free app that has them, this is especially great for playing Angry Birds since there is no payed version so you're always stuck with ads which get in the way and slow the game down.

Music Mod: A very modified version of the stock music app and my preference for playing my music, well until Kinoma Play comes out on beta for Android anyways which is supposed to be soon, it's the one app I miss from when I went from WM6.5 to Android.

SetCPU: again root required but such a great app, it allows you to set profiles to control the clock speed of the phone's CPU for increased battery life, for example I have 3 profiles on mine, if charging CPU is always at 1Ghz and never underclocks, when the screen is turned off it's set for a max of 384Mhz which is still plenty fast enough for playing music without any issues, and when the battery drops below 25% it limits the max speed to 806Mhz

Quick Boot: another root required App, it's simple a widget that reboots your phone, I've been annoyed since day one about the total lack of any reboot option and that you had to turn off the phone, wait for it to shut down completely and then turn it back on to reboot, this solves that issue

ShootMe: root required, app that lets you take a screenshot of your phone.

Any good ROM should have all of those things (or equivalents) built in. Just sayin'

I still have the stock ROM on mine cause there seems to be so many issues with custom ROMs and 4G support.

I prefer my ROM's to be void of anything other than basic framework and default UI stuff. This allows me to configure them in whatever way I wish.

In fact, despite the fact that I have access to just about any handset on the planet (due to the nature of my work), I actually spent (a lot) of real money on a Nexus S at Best Buy, which came out of the box loaded with a very vanilla Android 2.3.3 (Gingerbread). I also had a secondary incentive, as it allowed me to participate in the IPv6 FUT. :p

I've been using the Ultimate Droid ROM for about the last 8 months and have been nothing but impressed. Not only does my phone run better (and faster) but it gets better battery life too. Dude just keeps making it better and better.

Speaking of rooting...

Just rooted my G1 Droid. Took me a bit of playing with, but I got Cyanogen 7RC (It says its 2.3.3) up and running. I'll see how it runs, and whatnot from here.

What's the difference? I've read good things about Cyanogen. Is there much difference between mods?

There can be (I'm not familiar with these specific roms, so I can't say what exactly is different).

Be wary of anything that overclocks your CPU. Very bad for your phone (potential hardware damage), and extremely hard on battery life.

It's not very bad your phone. My Droid 1 has been OC'ed to 800MHz (from 500) for over a year. It runs great and doesn't really get warmer than it did at stock. If I didn't live in Tucson, I'd be running a 1GHz overclock but I know I'd forget about it during the summer time and let it end up getting too much sun.

Ultimate Droid is just a great ROM. The guy's coded the interface from the ground up on a few occasions. It seems to get updated more often than Cyanogen. I get about 25% extra battery life with it (even with the overclock). With every version it has gotten faster. Delay due to home screen redraws is now a thing of the past, at least for me. It's also using some things form gingerbread, such as the keyboard (but I think Cyanogen can boast that too).

My only gripe is the constant new releases I think has frustrated the theme creators. They seem to have gotten tired of having to repackage for the new version/revision. BlackDroid (the UD developer) has been on 3.1 for a while now though, so I'm hoping more themes will start popping back up.

Your experience is the exception, not the rule. Trust me on this. I can show you crates of phones people have killed by overclocking them, killing them, and then demanding a warranty return or filing a handset insurance claim.

Well, there's tons of us on droidforums.net that are using OC'ed Droids. I don't think I'm that much of an exception.
