The Glade 4.0

My laptop has a spare drive bay.

I picked up a 256GB Samsung 840 Pro series SSD. The Data Migration software that came with it was so simple...it even copied the recovery partition from the old drive. The new drive boots up fine...if it's the only drive in the computer.

If I add the old drive back in again, the computer always chooses to boot off the old drive, setting the old system partition as C: again and renaming my new drive I: I need to convince windows to always boot off of the new drive. (My BIOS doesn't treat the hard drives individually. Instead, it treats all internal SATA drives as one choice, so I can't just change the boot order.)

Can you swap bays?

In time, this too shall pass.

I already tried. Without swapping bays, windows didn't even see the new drive. When I swapped bays, it saw them both. Still boots off the old one though, if it's available.

I think I got it. There were additional settings in the firmware to specify which "UEFI SATA Boot Device" I wanted to prioritize. This was outside the normal boot order...

Not to be crszy old school but are the jumpers configured for slave and master? I don't run dual hard drives in any of my boxes so I am not sure this is a thing anymore.

That's old IDE stuff. Not on SATA drives. On the IDE drives you also had to constantly refill the coal furnace that heated the boiler...
