OK, so Amazon's refined its Kindle Paperwhite, making it a little lighter in weight, better contrast, smoothing out the backlight, etc. But! The biggest thing they announced today (to me) was Amazon MatchBook, which fulfills what I've been wishing they'd do for years:

Books you buy on Amazon now give you the option bundling a Kindle version as well, for $2.99, $1.99, $0.99, or free (the price is presumably set by the publisher).

And this goes for any qualifying books you've purchased from Amazon, past, present, and future, all the way back to 1995 when Amazon opened its bookstore.

Holy ****.

MatchBook launches in October.

I am so, so excited about this.

I've always wished I could get a package deal- digital for portability, combined with a hardcopy for my library that I can easily loan out.

I really hope Barnes & Nobles follows suit!

That's nice and all, but publishers had better decide on "free", because I'll be damned if I give anybody what should be full price for an e-book in addition to full price for a physical book.

Funny, my buddy and I were talking about this before our D&D game Saturday. If you pay full price for a hard cover book, you should get a down load code for the E-book. It shouldn't cost you more.

Yeah. I buy the hard-back and then go find an e-copy online. I usually don't feel bad about it.

Wouldn't it just be a "media swapping copy" just like burning your CDs to your ipod (assuming you are actually using both at the same time.)

That's pretty much how I justify it, yeah.

I saw this thread title and thought "did the paperwhite I just bought become obsolete and improved upon already?"

Good to know that they are doing this. My wife and I have had similar conversations about it.

Now if they could merge Amazon accounts...
