Playing around with the Xbox SmartGlass I decided to give XBox Music a shot, since I'm contemplating a Pandora paid sub...

How the hell does (a) SmartDJ go from Rory Gallagher to Five Finger Death Punch in THREE songs?

Is this typical?

I'm musically fairly adventurous, but... I mean, damn..

I've generally had a great experience with Smart DJ, but I've found that it works better if you've already got a good amount of related artists in your library.

I just opened Xbox Music to give it another shot. I simply queued up a few albums of my own music (not SmartDJ or whatevever).

After the third track, I get an ad. Yes, a commercial (both audio and a popup - for Geico I believe).

/FAIL

I just permanently closed that App. There is no way I'm going to tolerate a commercial in the middle of an album I paid for. There are too many non-commercial alternatives for that to be a viable option for me.

Back to Pandora/Google Music/Amazon for me...

And speaking of Pandora, there is still no Pandora app for the Win 8 Metro (or whatever they are calling it now) UI.

I'm stuck playing it in the browser.

I'm still in my free trial for Xbox Music. I've streamed many albums on the Xbox, PC, and laptop. I've also DL'ed music for it directly to my phone.

I have yet to hear a single ad.

I'll throw in a recommendation for my music subscription of choice - http://Mog.com. Showed up in an audiophile magazine by winning the best quality streaming service (they were doing 320k streams when 128 was common). Free with ads, 4.99 a month for unlimited PC streaming, 9.99 a month for unlimited pc/phone (can download tracks on your android/ios phone/tablet and play with no connection). I prefer it because it's much more geared to the album type of listening, I can work through the back catalog of an artist by album/date and get recommendations based on that. Have never heard an ad in my paid account.

Wow, Mog is awesome. It's exactly what I'm looking for in a streaming music servic e (with the possible exception of archiving my own music and making it available).

It's a bit pricey at $10 a month, but I've been listening to a lot more music since I cancelled Cable TV, and am more than getting my money's worth.

Mog is superior to Pandora in every way possible, and will only get better as they add more music to their library.

Thanks Darkroland!

Cool man, glad you like it! I've tried most music services, and for the way I personally listen to music (full albums, full catalogs of a performer) it is by far the best. Their suggestion "just for you" system is pretty solid after you like a few things as well, I've found some good artists. Also, you can listen on pc only for 4.99 a month, my wife actually has that account for work and uses it every day.

I like how you can adjust the mix of 'artist only' to 'similar artists'.

So far it seems to to a pretty good job of matching to suit my tastes.

So Pandora has introduced a 40 hour monthly limit on their free mobile app. Is there a good free replacement streaming app?

Does the cloud service only work with Windows 8?

I wanted to give XBox Music a chance, I really did. But it did two things I couldn't forgive:
  • It ignored some of my MP3s in favor of playing whatever it had in its library. In one case, this meant playing a studio version instead of the live track that I own; in another, it meant playing a "clean version" instead of my "parental advisory" version.
  • It played commercials while I was listening to my own music.

And since Pandora still has not produced a Windows 8 app, I've been listening to iHeartRadio.

KILL IT! KILL IT WITH FIRE! How could anyone, anywhere, think that was acceptable? I pay, so I don't have to listen to commercials. Ads are to subsidize free content. I hope any provider that thinks paying for ads is acceptable goes down the tubes quick. That includes Hulu Plus.

I just don't understand how this happens to you guys. I've been using it for several months and have yet to hear a single ad.

The answer to the question that you never actually asked is, "Xbox Music is an internet service and not a Windows 8 / Phone / Xbox service. They all just tie into the internet service." You look it up on the website that I already sent you to and click "add to collection" or you can use the native music app on any of those other platforms.

Bro, do you even internet? Did you even try signing in?

I see what your misconception is. You don't upload music to the cloud. It doesn't work that way. This is not an alternative to Google Music.

For the sake of clarity in the future, you should have asked, "How does one upload their own music files into the cloud?"

So how do I get the music I have currently stored on my external hard drive that is in .mp3 format into my collection online if my operating system is Windows XP?

If you want to use Xbox Music, you can't. It doesn't allow users to put their own music into the cloud. You could alternatively use Google Music or Amazon Cloud Player which both offer importing. If you just want a place to store your files and you also want it to be a Microsoft service, you could always upload them to SkyDrive.
