That **** is scary. I always just assumed viruses couldn't be a big deal, worst case you just have to reformat your computer. But losing all your data like that... really makes me want to lock down my computer better. I'm pretty good with backups too, but I'll often leave the drive connected to my computer. Well, not anymore... On the other hand, if the worst case scenario is you pay $300 to get your data back, it's actually not that bad. Not worth stressing about too much anyway. |

once upon a time there were a couple of virii that caused physical damage to components. Nothing so dramatic as the fabled 'death ray virus' but a couple of them physically crashed the HD heads into the drive. I don't think that's even possible anymore, certainly not with a solid state drive (though with the max number of write/rewrite operations on SSD's I could see a virus wearing out the drive deliberately, but I've not heard of anyone actually doing that) |
