So I'm in the unique (well, judging by the angst on the internet, not that unique) situation of trying to install Win 8.1 on a mac.

The issue exists with a digital copy, from what I can tell- there don't seem to be any legit sources for an ISO that I can download.

So I'm left with either finding (buying) a DvD copy, borrowing a USB DVD drive and ripping the ISO from that....

Or borrowing a windows computer that I can download the winsetup.exe file to, use that to download the ISO and then use that ISO to make a bootable flash drive that I can use to install 8.1 on a partition via bootcamp?

This seems unnecessarily complex, unless I'm missing something obvious?

Install normal Windows 8 first and then do the 8.1 update through the MS Store

I am still grandfathered in to the legacy Technet (until July) and was surprised to find that they had updated .iso's for Windows 8.1 Update (All Versions).

It made for a nice, seamless install when I rebuilt my gaming PC after an SSD issue.

I may be missing it, but it seems the MS store doesn't sell Win 8 anymore? All I can find is just Win 8.1. Same with Amazon, aside from paying more for the older (legacy) version.

If I borrow a PC, yes.

But you can only use that if you have a PC running XP/Vista/7/8- it's one of the workarounds I mentioned in the OP.

I think it's my only option, I just think it's really stupid that it's this hard to install Win 8.1 on a fresh HD.

Maybe it is, but there's also nothing stopping you from downloading a torrent .iso and using your legitimate key to activate.
