I'm soooo glad I slept through Windows 9....

What a relief...

They are trying to change the rule that only odd numbers are good.

or

8.1 = 8+1 = 9?

I know Windows 8 wasn't well-received, but was it really so bad that they needed a number buffer to market the fixes?

There's little objectively wrong with windows 8. If it had been marketed under another name by another company, it would have been considered a solid OS, perhaps even lauded a plucky contender to evil MS and overly complicated Linux. However as a successor to windows 7, it sucked

One platform, one store. Microsoft is finally unifying their devices and operating systems with Windows 10.

Installed 10 last night in a Hyper-V and it's pretty sweet. UI all around is smoother, windows have a nice fade in/out, etc. New start menu is pretty slick. You can drag resize it and add or remove basically as many tiles as you want to it. Being able to run modern apps on the desktop makes them more useful, but they still have some minimum sizes; can't resize them to just anything you want quite yet.

One thing I really like is that MS finally added native virtual desktops. It's about time.

Also, an MS dev has come out and said that the real reason they skipped Windows 9 is because of lazy third party vendor coding practices:

Quote:
Microsoft dev here, the internal rumours are that early testing revealed just how many third party products that had code of the form
Code:
if(version.StartsWith("Windows 9")) { /* 95 and 98 */ } else {

and that this was the pragmatic solution to avoid that.

Ahh nothing like brining up the ole "It's all third party software's fault" shtick

It's a very real problem. I see similar lazy developer queries almost on a daily basis.

I know. Actually I'm probably guilty. I'm just being silly.

Windows 8 is a much improved OS over windows 7 in every possible technical way.

The fact that the interface only really feels right on touch-screens is why it takes so much flack. That's so easily fixed (ClassicShell FTW) that I consider it a non-issue. I love Windows 8.

Win 10 is awesome. It's what Win8 should've been. I'm looking forward to seeing it improve as it moves towards release.

Heck, you don't even need ClassicShell. With all the user-friendly updates in Win8.1, it can be natively configured to very much look & feel less "modern".

Let's be honest, the only difference between the current technical preview (free) and the ultimate release of Windows 10 (not free) is probably just going to be some changes to modern apps that you wont use anyway.

Yeah? The last "beta" OS I tried was 2k... so there's that.

I honestly think I run more software now that's beta than anything else. I'm running tech preview Win 10, OS X Yosemite dev preview, beta nightly builds of browsers, developer preview Windows Phone. Beta doesn't mean what it used to.

Over a million downloads, 200k+ feedback submissions and 64% of installs are on daily driver machines and not VM's.

I have it running on my laptop.

Its an OS, a lot like 7. :) Hasn't crashed or done anything weird. Had a bit of an issue with my sound drivers, they didn't come up natively. But eh, that's minor.

Seems alright.
