Someone local is selling an Alienware m1x R1 laptop for $200 that has a broken LCD, but *supposedly* nothing else wrong with it. The only reason I'm considering it is because that's the only thing my son wants for Christmas and I can't afford to buy him one. (Nor would I...a 12 year old doesn't need several hundred dollars with of computer to play minecraft...) Is it even worth a look?

Well a new screen will run you about $50 for the part plus labor, which would probably be another 50-100. |

Best way to test it is to hook it up to an external monitor and see how it performs. |

That's a good idea, NF. The specs he gave are 350GB HDD and 4GB RAM. I forgot to ask for processor speed but Google says 1.3Ghz....is that enough? |

I looked on ebay and saw just the LCDs for $42 but the whole LCD screen for $97-$148. Rori, I want it fixed but don't know if I should have a pro do it or not. |

Cracking one is not for the uninitiated. If you can find a trustworthy LCD and installer, how much lap top can you get for the equivalent price? It won't be an alienware. |

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. When I worked in IT, even my fellow IT peeps wouldn't work on a laptop. I had a friend try to replace a kbd for me on one and he cracked it. This guy wants $200.....I considered offering $100 and seeing where that went. It looks like a non Alienware laptop, comparable, would be about $250-$300 |

An equivalent laptop new would be just as good, and wouldn't need an LCD replacement and likely have a warranty, no other issues, etc. And also wouldn't be 4 years old. Which is an eternity in computer age. |

Yeah....I told him we'd pass. I just was reeaaaally hoping to make my kiddo happy for Christmas since that's all he wants is an Alienware computer. This will be the first year that "Santa" didn't bring him what he asked for. But "Santa" is not dropping $700-$1000 for a gaming computer for a 13 year old. |

Might be a good time to explain the difference between "Marquis Branding" and "Similar but without the Name". |

On the bright side, your kid didn't want a 4-year old Alienware computer in the first place. He wanted the brand new one. |

Müs wrote: Might be a good time to explain the difference between "Marquis Branding" and "Similar but without the Name". He actually did that on his own and stayed up all night doing "internet research" and discovered that he can build his own gaming computer for less than $500. That's an option for the future, possibly. |

Now you can explain the difference between Marquis and marque. |

One's a little more sadistic than the other. And *technically* it'd be marquee for that usage. |
