I'm not one to spend much on a phone. I've been using a Nexus 4 for almost three years. Before that I had a cheap Galaxy Ace from Samsung. I prefer Nexus because of the stock Android OS without bloatware, and the quick updates directly from Google with no provider interference/limitations. But the Nexus 4 is aging. I got it free, and I think $600 or more for a phone is idiotic. And yet, I'm considering buying Google's new flagship in a few days when my carrier makes it available. At $500, it looks like a bargain compared to the many phones it out specs. It's not much more expensive than the 32 GB Nexus 5X coming out at the same time, so i figure i should get the better of them. It's just... Still a lot to spend on a disposable bit of electronics in one's pocket. So I want to be sure.... Any reason not to look at this device?

The only thing that's giving me pause is that I've grown very fond of wireless charging. Ironically enough, because I find my wireless charging car dock incredibly convenient (by which, I mean it's exactly as convenient as my old pogo pin car dock was, back when that was a thing phones had).

I'm probably going to wait long enough for a friend to get one, and see how he likes it, then handle it myself to see if it's merely pushing my screen size comfort level or exceeding it (in which case, I might get a 5X).

If I don't do either, I might just root my Galaxy S6 and resign myself to having to seek out updates manually, something I'm resistant to as it just seems like so much work and attention.

Looking at screen sizes lately, it seems to me that the major manufacturers have forgotten that these devices are phones.

Yeah, but they're not, really.

They are ultra-portable computers that can perform the functions of a phone. I use about 4GB of data per month on my Nexus 4, send and receive many dozens of texts, and only about 5-10 minutes of talk time.

Still using an iPhone 4s. I don't need anything more right now and don't really want to spend the money if i don't have to.

Have fun with your toys guys.

In 2011 I'd have thought you extravagant to go with your too-expensive iPhone. (Which probably only cost you $200 at the time.)

I didn't even have a smartphone at the time.

The thing lately is it's replaced my PC as my go-to device for lounging around surfing the net with (which I spend a huge amount of time doing.)

Yes, but for guys, at least, it is still imperative that they fit comfortably and unobtrusively in your pocket. We don't carry purses or handbags to drop a 6.7 inch phablet into. And 6 inch screens with large bezels are pushing into that territory.

It's really a shame I can't get the Nexus 6p in a 5.2" form factor. My Galaxy S6 is smaller than the Nexus 5x with specs that better match the 6p, but doom me to TouchWiz and Samsung's update schedule. But I'll miss the 1440 AMOLED screen and wireless charging if I "downgrade" to the 5x...

I'm in the 'they are too big' camp. Not just too big for my pocket, but too big to use comfortably with one hand.

I do very little movie watching on my phone (the occasional youtube video, etc...), and when I do, it's only a minute or two at most.

Having a decent camera in the phone is nice, but I don't need 4 gillion megapixles for that either.

I'm currently using an LG-G4, which has been a great phone for me, although I'd prefer it a tad smaller.

I'm not looking for a new phone, but I am tempted by the 5x, for the reasons Taly mentioned (stock android). I just wish is was a tad smaller.

Yeah, but the 6P is, at at 5.7", a bit smaller than the Nexus 6, and I was waffling on that one (over the price, more than the size.) It's also smaller in total size than the iPhone 6S Plus, despite having a bigger screen (less bezel.) It's still a big phone, though.

Ars has a pretty good review on both new phones: http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2015/10/ ... ecosystem/

My carrier still has "coming soon!" beside the Nexus 6P on their website. I'm irritated.

If I recall correctly, none of the carriers will even sell it in the US. Play store only. Is buying it yourself an option up there?

I have one now, in my hands. Or it was in my hands. I'm posting from a computer because it's downloading all my apps right now.

Just a 32GB Nexus 6P.

I received a 64gb aluminum Nexus 6P today. It was supposed to arrive yesterday, but FedEx sucks.
