OK, so browsing some Cyber Monday sales today, I ran across the Precision T1700 on Dell's website: http://www.dell.com/us/business/p/preci ... orkstation $499, Windows 10/i3-4160. I've been following prices to build my own mini-tower for light gaming based on the i3, and I'm getting prices around $530, depending on HDD. PSU in the Dell is 380 gold, which is enough for what I need. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/WhwFvK Am I missing something in the Dell build? I've got a 750ti and a good SSD that I can throw in whatever I build/buy. |

That is a really expensive mainboard! 153 bucks, there are a lot of other options before you get to that price point. That is enthusiast/overclocking level. As well, do you have a licensed version of Windows 7/8.1? Microsoft now allows you to put in a 7/8.1 key to activate win 10 (as of the newest service pack), so you don't need to spend 85 bucks on it. I found a workable build (with your GPU/SSD) as low as this: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/gy34cf Now that's a micro ATX board, but it should work for what you're doing. If you can spend around 500, I would recommend something more like this: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/2TQNdC $454, gets you up to a full sized ATX mainboard, a mid-tower ATX case (will be MUCH less cramped than a micro-atx and easier to work in), an i5 instead of i3, 16GB of RAM instead of 4, plus the case is really pretty. Also has a 1TB drive, Dell has a 500GB. I left out an optical drive (in fact, the case doesn't even have a bay for one), as most people don't even use them anymore with USB keys so plentiful. So that's a LOT more power than the dell that's offered for 499. Really depends on what you have and what you need. |

I do not have a copy of 7- that's part of the expense, sadly. Thanks for the build advice! Makes a lot of sense, I wasn't sure why my board was consistently so expensive. I pretty much only play WoW, and my current PC is OK, but the 4gb ram limitation and the C2Duo processor are slowing it up consistently. So for me, a high clock dual core + ram is what I mainly need. |

Hmm, looks like your first list wasn't adding a price for the board at all, makes sense why it was so low. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/fLfjdC with a cheap board in it + win10 gets me about $100 cheaper than the Dell. Thanks! I really like http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00U86 ... _i=desktop for a case- I think I saw someone here recommend it. |

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/gPc7Q7 looks to be about as cheap as I can reasonably get it with that case + OS. So just under $400. That said, PCPartPicker gives me an error that my H81 board might not work with the Haswell Refresh CPU- seen that work/not work before? |

That's weird, I still see a price when I click that first list. NephyrS wrote: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/gPc7Q7 looks to be about as cheap as I can reasonably get it with that case + OS. I haven't, but I don't believe you'd be able to flash the bios without a chip that worked in the board, so that wouldn't work. Might want to upgrade to this mainboard: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/gZTR7P Personally, I've had better luck with ASRock than I have with MSI as well. |

Why i3? |

Less expensive for high clock speed, and no real need for multi-threaded use. |
