So I need a new keyboard. I write a lot for work, and my old ones are starting to approach dying. Moved to a faculty position with a good office and a permanent space to trick out, so after getting good monitors and mouse, it's time to replace the old keyboard.

Between emails to students and colleagues, writing lab manuals, tests, and working on manuscripts, I do a good 10-30 pages per day many days.

I've long been a fan of low-travel keys, but have gotten a chance recently to play around with some good mechanical keyboards, and am re-thinking how much they'd slow me down.

Thoughts? What's your go-to?

I love the Apple keyboard with no numpad.

I love my Logitech g910.

Best kb I have ever owned. Constant use 9-12 hours a day.

This is what I have now, and it's starting to get a bit beaten up and finicky- and I'm wishing I had a numpad a decent amount of the time.

I was just going to get another Apple wireless keyboard, but thought it was worth looking around- there's lots of other stuff available in a similar price range.

This was one of the mechanicals I tried recently. How do you feel about the switches? Too noisy, not noisy enough?

Its fairly quiet for a mechanical. It doesn't have the *CLICK* sound of the old IBM AT mechanicals, but it does *feel* weighty and clicky. I really dig the positive sort of feedback when typing with it.

It also helps me not talk to customers when I'm trying to fix their ****. They can hear me typing away cheerfully, and I don't need to interject with any "hang on a sec" bullshit ;)

I'm interested in getting a Das Keyboard. You don't have to get the one with no labeled keys, they have others.

Logitech illuminated keyboard. Low travel, backlit, quiet, fast, has a keypad, excellent quality and feel. I've been using one for a couple of years at work and other than the crumbs under the keys it still looks nearly new.

Edit: And most importantly NOT wireless. I despise wireless keyboards.

I bought a Razer keyboard about 5 years ago when I got my desktop and it has proven comfortable and durable.
