Ok, so I've got a pretty good handle on the day to day management of my website, but I'm trying to understand if hosting wise, I have it set up ideally. I (used) to have a main central page, with links to both mine and my wife's subdomains, as well as a consulting page I ran for my mom- i.e., family.com, me.family.com, wife.family.com, mom.family.com). They both used theirs less and less, and as my job got more visible, I use mine more and more. So I registered a new domain (me.com), and set it as an "add-on" domain to my main hosting service. It appears as a new site in my root directory, and I redirected my (previous) subdomain to the new domain. My wife now wants to use hers more for a blog, and I'm thinking about setting up a similar add-on domain for her (wife.com). From what I understand, the main drawbacks of add-on domains vs. separate hosting are: Shared bandwidth/space (but we won't use all of what we have anyway) Security (single root directory, hacking one page compromises the others) Backup/Restoration functions usually hit all domains at once. From what I can tell, this is mainly an issue for people who are making websites for clients, and hosting them all as add-on domains to save as costs. Doesn't seem like any of them would impact my setup negatively, but I wanted to check with those of you who are wiser. |

You seem to have a handle on the situation. The main issue with a single server is that of security. I don't know what you're paying for your hosting now, but Digital Ocean has "droplets" for as low as $5 a month. They are virtual servers with unique IPs, settings, etc. However they require some setup and command-line configuration. |

I'm probably paying more than I should, but I really like the setup and service where I am. It's run by two faculty, and I get responses from one or the other of them to any problem, usually within 10-15 minutes. I'm paying $30/year for the domain registration + hosting combined, with an additional $15 per year for additional domain registrations. 2GB storage, unlimited bandwidth. It was initially cheaper, since it was grant supported hosting for faculty outreach activities. |

I have no idea what you're talking about. Show me the difference in the apache configs. |
