For my birthday/Christmas, I collected some money and bought a 3D printer. The one I chose is a Creality CR-10, which I got from banggood.com for $380. It took about a week for me to get it calibrated so it wasn't spewing filament everywhere. So far I've printed a few upgrades/modifications for my printer, a couple of core followers for disassembling locks, and Benchy, a little boat that tests the capabilities of the printer.

I installed a software called Octopi on one of the Raspberry Pis I have sitting around, and now that device can control the printer, managing its print jobs, providing a web interface, and even streaming live webcam footage and creating timelapse videos of my print jobs. It's pretty neat and it is a lot better than trying to copy files to the SD card when I want to print something. Right now I am 15 hours into an estimated 2.5 day print job. This will be the first very long print I've done, so I hope it doesn't mess up. Once this is done I have a list of things I want to print, for myself and for my friends. It's kind of addicting.

Does anyone else have a 3D printer? What are your thoughts and experiences regarding them?

I have a Anet A6 I have been playing around with for 6 months or so, dialed in and printing PLA, PETG, and ABS. I priced out what it would cost to upgrade so I can print with the more exotic plastics like nylon and polycarbonate, then decided to upgrade the whole printer instead.

I have a Folgertech FT-5 arriving in 2 days, I'll be setting it up using a mirror setup of two E3D titan aero's

I mostly print stuff for RC/drone stuff and whatever parts I need when building junk or fixing stuff around the house. I've only downloaded off thingiverse twice so far, just to be printing something the nieces/nephews/grandkids could watch being printed over the holidays

Here's some fence parts, a power tool vacuum attachment, and a "work in progress" design for a phone/watch dock...

Yes, it's quite addictive :)

Looks like fun.

I could probably buy a 3D printer setup for all of the money I've spent on Shapeways buying printed bicycle accessories.
