So their "Big announcement and Breakthrough" is a Big iPhone?

I can just imagine the product development meeting.
"So guys, what next?"
"Well, people seem to like the iPhone. Why don't we make one that's... bigger!"
"OMFG!! BRILLIANT!!! ROLL WITH THAT!!!!1"

In all fairness, if I had $500 burning a hole in my pocket, I would MUCH prefer a piece of hardware like this over a laptop.

Ultimately I can't help but feel underwhelmed/disappointed, as much as I would love to have one. I was hoping for facilitating creation, not consumption.

If I had $500 burning a hole in my pocket, I'd get a droid and a netbook ;)

No physical KB, to me is fail.

My Droid makes me happy in the pants, truth be told. I'll skip the netbook though, don't need one :)

Looks like I'll have to hedge my bets on the Microsoft Courier. Really hope they can deliver, because that thing looks awesome.

It reminds me of those oversized remote controls for old people, just instead it's an oversized ipod touch for old people.

And the screen res on it is crappy for a screen that size, 720x480 on a 9.7" screen, a large amount of smartphones have higher than that now and on screens as small as 3"

Because the iPhone is the only reason AT&T still *has* a wireless department :p

Overheard @ the office:

Engineer: Shoulda just called it the Newton II.

Me: Oh, you mean the iPhone XL?

Engineer: Yeah, the next version is going to be called the Max-iPad.

Me: I could make a joke here about it absorbing information from the internet flawlessly... but I'm not gonna.

A non-AT&T iphone would make me happy, get some of those steve jobs wanabes off of AT&T so my 3G connection is good like it use to be before there were millions of iphone users downloading their stupid apps to tip their phone and pour a beer and other stupid **** and bogging down the network.

:?: It's 1024x768 at 132ppi.

This is what I was expecting. I think I'll hold off on the Kindle for this. I love reading on my iPod Touch, and this is that + a much much larger screen. I like having color, and the backlight.

Also, I don't know what it is, but I loooove the reading apps that I have that offer a "page-turn" animation (and preferably a little paper turning sound). Such a little thing, but so important.

Also, I've been consistently impressed with the iPod Touch as a gaming machine (much more so than either the DS or the PSP, and that's not a comparison I really expected to ever make when Apple started touting its systems gaming capabilities), and so that's a plus as well.

So what kind of pricing on this thing would sway everyone's opinion one way or the other? (Assuming it would.)

You know, considering the prices of the large kindle/nook, you can't really complain about the price on this bad boy.

Except, AFAIK, you don't have to pay a subscription fee to get 3G on the Kindle.

Kindle:
9.7" diagonal E Ink®
10.4" x 7.2" x 0.38"
3G/Wifi
10 ounces
$489

iPad:
9.7" LED-backlit, IPS display
9.56" x 7.47" x 0.5"
Wifi
16gb Storage
Full touchscreen, 3D capability
App Store
Media Support
Internet Browsing
1.5 lbs
$499

I can't really justify my desire for a large Kindle, now.

Ahh, that's a bit better then, an article I was reading earlier said it was 720x480, though at this point i'm spoiled cause of my UMPC, so even 132ppi seems bad when you're used to 265ppi, lol.

So... get an iPhone, hack it and use T-Mobile?

I'll wait for the prices to drop and the quality to be verified.

Then I'll wait some more most likely.

Currently under contract with Sprint. But T-Mobile is supposedly trying to buy Sprint PCS... so it should only be a matter of time...

I'm sure there will ultimately be non-AT&T iPhones. I just don't know that there will be CDMA iPhones. If Apple just holds out long enough, they make a GSM phone and it works on Verizon because Verizon's LTE/4G rollout uses GSM (as far as I know).

Anyways very much like the iPad, name notwithstanding. Now all that I want to happen is:

1. Apple puts Google Voice app up for download
2. AT&T/whatever wireless provider passes traffic for it
3. Said provider decides they're hunky-dory with just selling me a data plan without a voice plan

With that, pair my iPad up with a bluetooth headset, and it's my "phone", too. How long, another couple years?

Just curious...

How much would wireless you be willing to pay for a data onlyplan that allows unlimited VoIP? And do you see it as a profitable business model for wireless providers?
