It's official. Frustrating that device hardware and aesthetics is going to force me into iPhone OS submission once again. Really wanted a WP7 device. |

Hmm. And now, my shopping can begin. Front-facing camera; are they going to do anything useful with that (video calling), or is it just to ease the camwhore process away from mirrors? |

Don't tell him about the SDK emulators you can use ;-p I know its a lot extra for 32gb, but I filled my 3GS pretty quick at 32. If you can spring it, you may want to do that rather than 16 |

It occurred to me, as I was processing the "WiFi only and only to other iPhone users" news that this will eventually end up being pretty limited. Sure, it starts out limited by being first, but given Apple's recent policies, I don't see it getting less so. That is to say, I see no reason Apple would be particularly motivated to ensure that iPhone video chat is interoperable with other types, say, Skype, that use 3rd party or open standards. Why should they? That's just a lost iPhone 4 sale on the other end! This is, I feel, consistent with Apple and AT&T's stances on other things in their iPhone history. So assuming this, 3rd party apps that do interact with other sources (other phones that add forward-facing cameras, Skype and other PC-based video chat clients, etc) will then be banned from the iTunes App Store because they duplicate core iPhone functionality, an existing restriction on the App market. So, yeah. Less excited about this as I think about it. Coupled with the data metering overtures FarSky mentioned meaning I doubt the WiFi restriction will be lifted anytime soon, making this a pretty limited feature in my book. Thank you, Apple and AT&T, for motivating me to break free of your iron fist. |

The new data plans only apply to new accounts. If you've already got an unlimited plan under AT&T, you're going to keep it. |

Lenas: You are free to keep the plan, but as a person experienced with both AT&T and Verizon wireless, I can tell you exactly what they did when my plan was no longer tolerable for them: they deprecated my phone. So, yes, I can keep the plan, they just don't sell or support hardware for that plan. |

I'm wary of offers to keep the plan -- do I get to modify my plan and keep the unlimited data? For instance, can I change the number of minutes on my unlimited data plan, or add/remove the early nights feature? Or is my grandfathered plan frozen as-is, and if I need to make any changes, they need to set me up with a new plan, and, gosh darn, but the system just won't let me select the unlimited plan you had anymore? It's nice of them to say, and were I mid-contract, or not considering switching to begin with, it would placate me until it changed or I needed to make a pro-active decision based on it (like upgrading to a new phone and getting my contract locked in again). But I'm not going to count on it for any new commitments. Your mileage is welcome to vary, of course. |

Wow... those data plans are terrible. |

For AT&T, it used to be that changing your plan, to include a new phone (which changed the contract dates), was the same as getting a new plan. The cynic in me says that the "existing user can keep their plan" is, as Mus suggested, smoke and mirrors. You can keep it as long as you don't change any terms. Maybe AT&T is playing nice though, and for those looking at these phones, I hope so. |
