For work I need a device that can do multiple things: 1. Receive numeric pages from landlines. 2. Receive text messages. 3. Receive phone calls. The limitations include: 1. I work on the first floor of the hospital. There is NO cell reception for Verizon, and little for AT&T. 2. I want to replace two devices with one. (Have a pager which can receive here, and an old cell phone which does not work here.) Any suggestions? |

So what cell companies do you have available there? Do you have WiFi access? Pretty much any cell phone company has the option to send a text that's just the number that called. If you have WiFi, any of the Droid phones or iPhones will allow the use of google voice which can handle texts and such. |

Müs, did Apple reverse their ban on Google Voice and Skype from the iPhone store? Last I heard, Google's app was rejected, and Skype banned, in the fall of '09 because they duplicated core phone services, which violates the iTunes store restrictions. |

Skype's not banned. In fact, they just updated yesterday to include multitasking support. Edit: Also, it was ATT that had the problem with Skype. But I guess that's irrelevant, 'cause it's available. *shrug* |

Well, yes, it was AT&T that had the problem. They're the primary reason those restrictions are ON the Apple store. I simply wasn't aware that the decision to ban them had been reversed. |

There's still not a Google Voice app available (but the web interface is a perfect replacement...go-go gadget workaround), but I was unaware of Skype ever being blocked. |

No Google Voice App for the iPhone? Wow. That's bad. |

See, when you have centralized distribution/authorization of apps, you can be protectionist of your minute plans and block competitors that would bypass it. Now I remember the compromise Skype made -- it only functions on WiFi, so if you're not on a WiFi somewhere, you have to use real AT&T minutes. |

That's...not accurate at all. http://www.skype.com/intl/en/get-skype/ ... for-skype/ In fact, the question, directly posed: https://support.skype.com/faq/FA10062/C ... 89F68CDB12 |

Okay, nevermind then. I must be going off an old article, perhaps? |

Doesn't matter that there isn't a Google Voice app, when a correctly-built web portal functions just the same. There's no difference between a bookmark and an app icon on an iPhone :p |
