I'm sure this will have some practical use. I just don't think that it's going to be movies or video games. |

Sure it will. This way they can put the movie, extras, video game, soundtrack, and copious quantities of DRM all on one disk. |

Discuss. Since I just got a blu ray player... and the format is not very old yet.... Screw you Sony. |

This will be the format that goes along with the 4k resolution TVs they're working on. |

Yeah, because we all need to see every pore on an actor's/actress' face, right? |

Bring it on. I'm quite satisfied with Blu-ray so if it makes all the DVD movies I haven't replaced with Blu-ray yet go on sale for $4.99 at the grocery store, I'm all for it. |

I'm always glad they're developing something new and better. However, they know blu-ray isn't anywhere near saturation yet, and they also know that joe blow thinks DVD's and netflix online streaming look "good enough". So selling this format by the time they finally get it to market will be pretty tough. Would be nice for the PS4 games though. |

My thought: It's for use in data storage, not consumer media. |

It's Sony. The company is insidious. Think of the worst possible reason they would produce a new format and go with that. |

All depends on timing. If they rush to introduce it, bad move, as BluRay is barely out of its infancy. If they hold off until more HD TVs are in homes and BluRay hardware/software is cheaper, I don't see it as a bad thing. It will just be another bleeding edge "gotta have it cuz it's new" product. Hell, look how long it took VHS to die after DVDs came out. It's a nice thought that they will keep it strictly to data storage only, but let's face it, that ain't gonna happen . . . |

My thoughts: I don't think 4K resolution TVs will be in the home any time soon. So buy your 3D 1080p TVs. Blu Ray is also new, I don't think it will be replaced any time soon. Supplemented, maybe, replaced, no. These new disks, I don't think they will hold any 4k resolution movies, because people will still have 1080p TVs. I'd be surprised if 4k resolution and this new 1TB optical disk replaced 1080p and Blu Ray within the next 10 years. Not to mention PS4 and what resolution / media that will use. |

Rodahn: You're always way to quick to defend Sony. Do you work for them? Are the recipient of some trust fund backed solely by Sony stock? |

Sony makes some of the best consumer electronics in the world. I'm watching a perfect example of that even as we speak - the KDL-52XBR4 While YMMV Khross, perhaps if you didn't drag your feet you'd get better mileage. |

Sony is on the cutting edge. Yeah, they're a bit overambitious. Yeah, DRM and proprietary formats suck. It's the consumers that buy their products, though, and I don't blame them. PS3 is way better than XBox. My Sony TV kicks ***. My Sony camera kicks ***. I don't really understand having love or hate for any one specific company. |

Taskiss: Nah, Sony makes shitty electronics and engage in ethically compromised business practices as a matter of course. Of course, it's the latter part that really sparks my ire. Nevandal: There are better alternatives than Sony, and the consumer has spoken on the XBox vs 360: Sony got its *** handed to it. |

Khross: Um how was my above reply pro-Sony? If anything it was incredibly middle-ground. As I said, it depends on timing. They still have the potential to screw it up. And someone as anti-Sony as you has zero right to be calling anyone out for bias. Just an FYI (before you come back with "I'm not biased," look at your reply right above this one). |

I like being able to watch Hi-Def movies and the PS3 exclusives are better than the XBox exclusives. I'm only missing out on 1 or 2 XBox games that I might be interested in. PlayStation Move is also way more interesting to me than Kinect, because I don't think MS can deliver. Games aside, PS3 is one of the best Blu-ray players on the market....and when I get a 3D TV, it will support 3D. |

Only if you get an expensive 3D tv. Don't even think about the more cost-effective DLP sets that are half the price. They use a different signal format that Sony could support with a patch, but wont, because their LCD's use something else. |

It doesn't have to be Sony brand, does it? Either way, I'm equally happy with Sony or Samsung displays. |
