Post subject:  Car Stereos: HD Tuner?

My current car stereo is breathing its last breaths. I'm looking at replacing it with a new car stereo, possibly this weekend. I'm interested in mp3cd playback and a front aux jack, which is practically standard in all decks nowadays. What isn't standard, however, is a HD radio tuner. I can get a basic stereo with my two requirements for $50 $70 and up. However, the models with builtin HD tuners start at $150 $160.

So, the question is (obviously), is it worth spending another $100 $90 or so to get an HD tuner in my car stereo?

Hmm, that's certainly cheaper, but requires me to install the radio myself. Not something I've done before.

It's marginally more difficult than adding RAM - about like replacing a graphics card. On the Crutchfield site, you just plug in the make and model of your car; they send you everything you need, and their customer service is outstanding.

How hard is it to pop the panel on your dash Vindi? That's always been my biggest fear for swapping out myself.

I already have an aftermarket CD deck in my car. Does that complicate the installation?

Hop, in my experience it's simple. They send you a tool designed to do it (akin to a slim-jim), if you need it.

Mook, it shouldn't unless they cut a larger opening. If you call them, I'm confident they'll be able to tell you for sure.

Did I mention that I was highly impressed by their customer service? My first replacement was when I put in a new head and speakers all around in my Jeep; I called them just to make sure I wasn't effing something up, and he walked me through it and even told me to get less expensive speakers for one pair because they were acoustically the same and actually more ruggedly built than the one's I had picked out.

I dunno Hop, I've not experienced any car stereo that was an integral part of the dash.

Hop, I have that car and I've taken the dash apart multiple times to put in my nav system. It's not one piece, it's actually three panels.

Like five screws and the rest is plastic clips. I can get my entire dash off in about 2 minutes.

To Mook,
I wouldn't spend any extra on HD Radio. I never, EVER listen to the radio. If I'm in my car, my iPhone is plugged in and that's that. If I want radio, Pandora from the phone is going to be better than any of the stations I could get. If you were asking about XM/Sirius that'd be a different story, because that actually has some good **** like Howard Stern.

I'm going to go with the chipper chicken cheaper stereo and forego the HD radio thing.

I love HD radio. I bought a new deck to get it exclusively. What I like about it mainly is that my favorite stations all have multiple channels, which means if a song comes on I don't like, I can just switch up to one of the other channels.

Left side panel at the seam. Screwdriver works, be careful not to scratch.
