So every couple months I get the linux bug and load it up. I don't feel like I can run it on my main PC because I'm too much of a gamer, but I load it up on my laptop to play with. This time, I'm running Ubuntu 10.10. Who's got some helpful tips? Must have apps, ways to run it on my main PC and get around the gaming issue, etc? So far, really liking it. Every time I load it up, the process is more streamlined, and driver support is much better. This time, no wireless issues at all (my main issue from last time I loaded it). |

Broadcom recently opened up their drivers, which is probably why your wireless is working. Are you really running 10.10? It's not October yet, which is why I ask. You're on a beta build of Ubuntu if you are. It's not a big deal, but some things could change between now and release. For gaming, your best bet is to peruse appdb.winehq.org, and depending on what you find there, you may want to consider Cedega for gaming. Cedega is the Wine fork that focuses on gaming. |

Yeah, I'm running the 10.10 beta, so far no major beta glitches. Thanks for the tip on Cedega, I'll check it out. Edit: Wow, gaming on linux has come a LONG way since I last investigated. If anyone's interested, I got Flash 10.2 working in chrome on 64-bit Ubuntu. Install Chrome Download Flash 64-bit here - http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer10.html Extract libflashplayer.so to a folder, then run this in terminal: Quote: sudo mkdir /opt/google/chrome/plugins sudo cp /usr/lib/flashplugin-installer/libflashplayer.so /opt/google/chrome/plugins Then edit the Chrome launcher to enable plugins, change the shortcut to: /opt/google/chrome/google-chrome --enable-plugins %U Whee, Flashplayer 10.2 in 64-bit Ubuntu Chrome. |

Ubuntu user at home, Debian user at work. My new comp has ... something wrong with it, though, so I haven't really done any gaming with it. And my old computer was too shitty to do any modern gaming on it, so I can't speak much to how well Wine works on average with modern games. I can vouch for it running WoW totally flawlessly, as far as I could ever tell. HL2 and Portal both worked quite well, too. Maybe not 100% perfectly, but 99% anyway. Must have applications? SSH, GNU Screen, irssi, mutt :p |
