Post subject:  bad naughty RAM

of the 4 sticks of RAM I've put in my system, 3/4 from Crucial have gone bad after a time. (pc is < 1 year old) I've never had ram fail at this rate.

System started taking random system errors after a few months, ran mem check and found 2 bad sticks of ram. pull them, didn't bother to RMA them, and the system has worked fine until two days ago.
Two days ago, the system was non-responsive, nothing allowed the system to boot until I pulled the 2nd stick of RAM. (its definately the stick, I swapped them and system was still unbootable)

So now I've got 3 bad sticks of 4. Crucial has a better reputation than this.... I can't decide if I should try to RMA the mobo, or just get the RAM swapped.

Good reputation or not, bad lots can happen.

so can bad power supplies and voltage controllers...

Sure. And if he'd RMA'd the first two sticks, and new ones were going belly-up, that'd be where I'd start looking, too.

Other things to consider.

Are you using the right RAM for your motherboard? Are the voltages and timings correct?

Your post in the Funday Monday thread indicates that you're using a rather power hungry memory setup. Could you tell us what motherboard (Manufacturer, Model No., Revision No.), and what power supply you are using?

Mobo is MSI 790FX-GD70.
Processor is a Athlon Phenom II 3.45
SILVERSTONE ELEMENT ST75EF 750W ATX12V / EPS12V
SAPPHIRE 100283-2L Radeon HD 5770 1GB 128-bit GDDR5

Yes, I verified all settings. PC has never been overclocked.

TheRiov:

The concern here is voltages, drive voltages, and timings, as opposed to any defect in the memory or damage from over-clocking components of your computer. Most motherboard manufacturers ship motherboards with BIOS configurations optimized for low memory, low power consumption setups -- generally no more than 2 1GB DIMMs of the highest rated memory the mother board supports.

Also, could you please post the specific product number for your memory modules.

Wow, is that true? Mobos are genuinely shipped to support the power drain for *two* gb?

I used to know about this stuff.... ;(

I know how you feel Sui. Ten years ago, before EQ drained all my free time, I kept on all this stuff. Now its like trying to read Sanskrit.
