Been watching a lot of Stephen Fry stuff the last month or so. Granted, a lot of it has been semi-recent TV stuff (a show called QI that he hosts is fairly sweet), but some have been videos along these lines. I like the way he thinks about a fair number of things.

I think Mr. Fry may find he feels differently about this new form of socialization with the public in the future. :P

Funny. I think he should have left his tweet about Milo Yiannopoulos up. I rather liked it.

I've seen a lot of his videos as well. I think I stumbled on him by way of some 'atheism-Christopher Hitchens-the universe is wonderful' YouTube chain of links. I was amused to find out that he apparently is similar to the character he played in V for Vendetta.

Yeah, I have a huge amount of respect for Stephen Fry. He's also very pleasant to listen to, his humor and general good attitude really shine through in his speaking.

Yup,Stephen Fry has a "general good attitude" unless you're Polish or Jewish or...

Right. Criticize the man for something that you haven't really looked into (because he was defending the jews, and his comments about the country of poland were referencing it's strong Ultra-fanatical and antisemetic Catholic movement, as opposed to polish people in general)...wonder whatever could inspire that?

You know his mother is Jewish right?

Corrected for accepted cultural tradition. Jewish race/culture is passed along matriarchal lines. If your mother is Jewish, so are you.

Yes, I realize he is Jewish; it would have been more correct for me to say "Polish or Israeli or..."

I still don't see the relevance of your comment. His criticisms are of those countries policies, not their people. Even his lambasting of the Catholic Church is not focused towards it's practitioners, but the policies of the Church. In point of fact, he's one of the few people these days that is in the public eye that seems to do a very good job of maintaining that distinction not just demonize people.

I guess saying that Poland is anti-semitic, and homophobic isn't really criticizing the people, just the country. Or, saying that straight women only use sex to get men into relationships isn't really demonizing people. /shrug

When has he said those things? Do you have a link?

Here's a couple:

“There has been a history, lets face it, in Poland, of a right wing Catholicism which has been deeply disturbing for those of us who know a little history and remember which side of the border Auschwitz was on and know the stories and know much of the antisemitic and homophobic and nationalistic elements in countries like Poland.”

"I feel sorry for straight men. The only reason women will have sex with them is that sex is the price they are willing to pay for a relationship with a man, which is what they want," he said. "Of course, a lot of women will deny this and say, 'Oh no, but I love sex, I love it!' But do they go around having it the way that gay men do?"

Now, I'm not saying he's an evil, evil man or anything, just that the plaudit filled love-fest was a bit much.

Nothing in this statement is untrue, however. It just wasn't very politically correct.

This was a stupid comment. (And how does he explain lesbians?) But I'll excuse him because he understands women even less than straight men do, given his lack of experience with our gender. I will grant him that the average male libido is significantly higher than the average female libido.

Well I agree whole heartedly with the comments on Poland, so aside form as Talya put it not being politically correct, I don't see anything wrong with it.

As for the comment on feeling sorry for straight men, I think what he's getting at is similar to an observation that a friend of mine had year ago.

If you want to see what the genders general views on sex are, just take a look at gays and lesbians.

Lesbians are all about cuddling and snuggling under the covers, where as gays are all about gallon bottles of lube with a pump top.
